Traditional “artificial upwelling” for marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) overlooks the coupled biological, microbial, and carbonate pumps that control oceanic carbon storage. By pairing deep (450 m) upwelling with a downwelling ribbon of equal depth, spaced more densely 35–80 km downcurrent, we achieve verified carbon removal, cooler sea-surface temperatures, and sargassum suppression using only wave energy.
For sargassum control, we rely on phytoplankton outcompeting for nutrients, as phytoplankton grow ~10–30× faster than Sargassum in the same waters.
In relevant locations such as Caribbean and tropical western Atlantic, upwelling 450m depth water achieves surface cooling - each +1 °C SST reduces the maximum sustained wind by roughly 6–8 % or one category on Saffir-Simpson.
Fisheries benefit is driven by the trophic cascade where each trophic level sees 10% energy gain from prior level, with phytoplankton forming base of ocean food web. In typical open ocean upwelling rates this generates 10,000 tons net primary production as baseline benefit.
Biodiversity benefits will track the trophic cascade, key being that our upwelled nutrients drive a natural progression of life - no monoculture here!
