Heirloom

Company
1-10
San Francisco, CA, USA

Company Description

Heirloom is on a mission to restore balance to our atmosphere. We are removing 1 billion tons of carbon dioxide by 2035, using natural processes to engineer the world's most cost-effective Direct Air Capture solution.

Naturally occurring minerals - alongside forests, soils, and the ocean - are one of our planet's most vital carbon sinks. Over geological timescales, carbon dioxide in the air and water chemically bind to these minerals and permanently turn to stone.

Our technology enhances this natural process, called carbon mineralization, to help minerals absorb CO2 from the ambient air in days, rather than years. By combining the best of engineering and nature, we can offer the most cost-effective and scalable Direct Air Capture solution in the world.

Software Engineer - Frontend/Full-stack

Full time role
Brisbane, CA
Jul 27, 2022
Company Summary According to scientific consensus, removing billions of tons of CO2 from the atmosphere (in addition to decarbonizing the entire economy) is crucial to limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. However, current technologies are too expensive and cannot be scaled to the volume needed. That’s where Heirloom comes in. Our mission is to accelerate the transition to a carbon negative society by capturing 1 billion tons of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2035 (equivalent to ~60M Americans’ annual emissions today). Unlike traditional engineered removal solutions, our Nature published technology combines the natural properties of minerals (carbon mineralization) with engineering to provide a low cost path to $50/tCO2 for Direct Air Capture (DAC), the cost at which carbon removal will be transformative. Our early customers are corporations and other entities that need to reduce and offset their carbon emissions to meet compliance requirements or carbon pledges. Our go-to-market strategy allows us to be unit profitable from day one, and reach >$1B in revenue just from existing markets and pledges. Our $100B opportunity lies with carbon markets set for creation in the EU, US, and other geographies. Over the next 18 months, we will de-risk our cost estimates, build a demonstration plant, and validate the commercial viability of this technology. About the job The Heirloom team is on a path to creating the world’s first sustainable, scalable, and economically viable carbon removal system. Reaching this goal will require dedicated collaboration between multiple disciplines, including geology, chemistry, mechanical engineering and software engineering. We are looking for our first frontend software engineer to join the team and own the design and development of responsive web interfaces for operating and monitoring our prototype to industrial-scale systems. You will be expected to respond to the changing needs of the company as the technology moves through each stage of development: R&D, demonstration and commercialization. In each stage, you can expect to encounter new problem domains, new groups of users, and new ways of interacting with the system. For example, during R&D your main users may be members of the research team looking to model mineral carbonation rates, while during commercialization your software may be leveraged for customer reporting and supply chain planning. As a software engineer at Heirloom, you will have autonomy in how you approach and solve problems, and you will have the freedom to work cross functionally to uncover and execute on opportunities to drive business value. This environment fosters continuous learning and innovation, which we believe are key to maximizing professional growth and impact on the planet. Responsibilities Own the design, development and maintenance of responsive web interfaces that system operators will depend on for operation and monitoring Develop data visualizations that highlight key metrics while also enabling exploration Develop a framework for automated functional and scale testing of UI components Develop secure user authentication flows, potentially integrating with SSO providers Drive user acceptance testing (UAT) of UI functionality across teams Coordinate feature development and delivery with backend engineers Perform regular code and design reviews Provide mentorship to other engineers regarding frontend technologies and best practices Experience and Skills 5+ years of experience with Javascript and/or Javascript frameworks (React, Vue, Svelte, Node, etc.) 3+ years of experience with data visualization libraries ( D3.js, chart.js, FusionCharts, etc.) Experience developing responsive web UIs Experience consuming data from web APIs Experience benchmarking UI performance Experience writing and maintaining automated test suites using frontend test frameworks (Selenium, Cypress, WebDriverJs) Experience deploying and running containerized applications using an orchestration tool (Kubernetes, Amazon ECS, OpenShift, etc.) Experience exploring SQL data through ad-hoc queries Basic graphic design skills (layouts, navigation, error handling, etc.) Bonus Points Experience with ElectronJs Experience writing web APIs Experience developing industrial or safety-critical UIs Experience integrating user authentication flow with SSO tools (Okta, Auth0, Active Directory, etc.) Experience integrating with multi-channel communication tools (Twilio, OneSignal, Slack, etc.) Experience with CI/CD tools (Jenkins, Harness, Github Actions, etc.) Knowledge of industrial automation and different industrial protocols You don’t have to have every listed requirement and skill to be a great fit - you may even teach us something about what we should be looking for! If you are passionate about this opportunity and think you have the skills to succeed, please apply! If not, but you know someone who might be interested, please share this post. We are committed to cultivating a culture of inclusion and equity, starting with our commitment to fostering diversity within our Heirloom team. We are able to grow and learn better with a diverse team, which is exactly what our planet needs. We encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, people with disabilities, women, LGBTQ+ people, and veterans. Please note: while we appreciate all applicants, only those chosen for an interview will be contacted by our team.

Company Summary Our mission is to accelerate our planet’s transition to a carbon negative society. We will capture 1B tons of CO2 from the atmosphere by 2035 (equivalent of ~60M Americans’ annual emissions today), and build a multi-billion dollar business along the way. The problem we are solving is that according to IPCC, billions of tons of CO2 need to removed from the atmosphere (in addition to decarbonizing the entire economy) by 2050 to keep global warming to 1.5 °C, but current technologies are too expensive and not scalable to the volume necessary. Unlike traditional engineered removal solutions, our Nature published technology combines the natural properties of minerals (carbon mineralization) with engineering to provide a low cost path to $50/tCO2 for Direct Air Capture (DAC), the cost at which carbon removal will be transformative. You will lead a team focused on different software focus areas to develop the software and data infrastructure for factories that capture and measure the CO2 from the air we breathe.  While our laboratory results demonstrate the general concept, we must scale from lab bench to industrial scales.  You will help shape and drive exploratory research and development phases to evaluate and test new ideas and setups.  You revel in both complexity and uncertainty and delight in breaking down and translating huge problems into actionable and testable systems requirements.  As we scale, you will help us design and build the infrastructure necessary to operate at the industrial levels necessary to effect global change on our CO2 footprint.  Your work has the potential to directly shape our fight against climate change. Responsibilities Lead a team of software and controls engineers developing a full stack solution to support our mechanical systems and orchestrate real-time events. Work with the software team in creating backend components for a custom orchestration and data system, along with a front end that gives operators, engineers, and scientist an insight of what needs to happen, what has happened, and what will be happening. About Us All across the world, from the azure pools of Turkey and Oman to the travertine terraces of Yellowstone, our planet quietly pulls carbon dioxide from the air and turns it to stone. For eons, Earth has relied on this process to balance its carbon cycle. What if it could be harnessed? What if we could do it faster, in larger quantities, and at a low enough cost to make it an effective tool in the fight against climate change? At Heirloom, we are turning that into reality. We use the natural carbon capture properties of abundant minerals to pull CO2 from the air, and store it permanently underground. We come to work every day to slow climate change, and are united behind a single, common goal - to remove 1 billion tons of CO2 from the sky by 2035, and to not stop before we get there. We bring together the precise recipe of science, technology, know-how, and strategy necessary to make low cost, high quality carbon removal a reality. If we’re successful, we will directly mitigate climate change, build a world we can proudly hand over to our children and grandchildren, and catalyze an industry that will rival the largest the world has ever seen. If you want to change the planet, come join us. Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion As temperatures continue to rise, individuals from marginalized communities will face the harshest impacts of climate change.  We believe wholeheartedly that building a diverse company is critical to Heirloom’s success.  To accomplish this, we’ve put recruiting, hiring and retaining individuals from underrepresented groups at the top of our priority list.  We urge you to apply if you identify as Black, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, American Indian or Alaskan Native, Hispanic or Latino, LGBTQ+ – or with any other underrepresented group – even if you don’t tick all the boxes in the description below.
