The RoleYou will be focusing on the design, build, and verification of our calcination and carbon compression systems, this is a critical piece of our system architecture that needs to be designed with construction and deployment in mind.  While our laboratory results demonstrate the general concept, we must scale from prototype scales to industrial scales.  You will help shape and drive exploratory research and development phases to evaluate and test new ideas and setups.  You revel in both complexity and uncertainty and delight in breaking down and translating huge problems into actionable and testable systems requirements.  As we scale, you will help us design and build the infrastructure necessary to operate at the industrial levels necessary to effect global change on our CO2 footprint.  Your work has the potential to directly shape our fight against climate change. 
The Process Engineering Internship/Co-Op is available to students currently working towards a BS or MS in chemical engineering or a related field.

What You Will Do

  • Use process engineering skills to design and build our novel enhanced weathering systems to capture CO2 at massive scale in the billions of tons
  • Lead the process design for a segment of the larger system
  • Work closely with senior process, mechanical, controls, and systems engineering staff, contributing to larger-scale projects
  • Collaborate with equipment suppliers in designing of equipment used within our process

Experience/Education

  • Understanding of fundamental chemical engineering principles (fluid flow, separations, reactor design)
  • Ability to read P&IDs and PFDs
  • Basic understanding of industrial equipment used in chemical processes (pumps, control valves, compressors, solid-gas separators) 
  • Engineering testing methodology; ability to design experiments and collect data

Bonus Points

  • Experience leading the creation of P&IDs and PFDs
  • Familiar with process control systems and have created simple process control narratives
  • Understanding of solids handling and conveyance 
  • Knowledge of pyrolysis, calcination or other thermal conversion processes
  • Experience with process simulation software (Aspen, Pro II, ChemCAD) and/or hydraulic modeling software (Korf, AFT Fathom)
