Job Description

Form Energy is a U.S. technology and manufacturing company that is developing and commercializing cost-effective multi-day energy storage systems to enable the global electricity system to run on 100% low-cost renewable energy, every day of the year. Driven by Form’s core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, our team is deeply motivated and inspired to create a better world. We seek to transform the energy landscape and do our part in making the world better for all. We are supported by leading investors who share a common belief that low-cost, multi-day energy storage will be a key enabler of tomorrow’s zero carbon electric system.
Role DescriptionWe are looking for a Battery Engineer II to join the Cathode Team, a group responsible for planning, executing, and evaluating electrochemical experiments that advance the understanding and optimization of battery performance of our long-duration energy storage systems. This is a hands-on role and will support the Cathode Team in developing electrodes for optimal cell performance and degradation reduction. In addition, the Battery Engineer will own experiments related to oxygen evolution reaction and evaluate the performance of Cathodes in a sub-scale test platform.  They will combine electrochemical test data and materials characterization data to draw conclusions and collaborate with the Cathode Team to propose the next steps. As part of a team of experienced battery scientists, material engineers, and data analysts, this is an opportunity to have a direct and daily impact on developing a unique battery technology designed to tackle climate change.

What You'll Do:

  • Contribute significantly in the lab to help build, test, and characterize cells
  • Evaluate data from various sources (constant current experiments, AC resistance measurements, chemical assays, mechanical testing, etc.) to draw conclusions and drive decision making
  • Design, execute, document, and analyze experiments to evaluate the performance of new electrode materials
  • Work with external vendors to qualify incoming products and develop materials specifications
  • Generate and write standard operating procedures for new or routine build and characterization efforts
  • Prepare samples for in-house and external characterization efforts
  • Evaluate samples using SEM, EDS, optical microscopy, XRD, and BET data
  • Combine materials characterization and electrochemical results to find the root cause of cell failures to improve electrode performance understanding
  • Communicate your findings within a small collaborative group of engineers

What You'll Bring:

  • Passion for our mission, sustainability, and climate change
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, or related field
  • Experience (including courses or student research) doing lab-based experimental work
  • Familiarity with standard electrochemical techniques (e.g., CV, EIS, RRDE) and battery testing (constant current, constant voltage, constant power) is a plus
  • Experience using SEM, EDS, XRD, XRF, or BET is a plus
  • Familiarity with battery or electrochemical devices a plus
  • Experience with JMP, Matlab, Python, or R is a plus
  • A growth mindset to pair with a preference for experiential learning
  • Enthusiasm for working on clean energy technologies

Form Energy, where possible, embraces a digital work environment and supports onsite, hybrid, and remote types of work with office locations in Somerville, MA (Greater Boston), Berkeley, CA (San Francisco Bay Area), and Eighty Four, PA (Greater Pittsburgh).
