Department Summary: 

Research and Development (R&D) is an organization responsible for identifying developing new promising clean energy technologies, particularly carbon capture technologies. 

Job Overview: 

The Principal Project Manager (PM) is accountable and responsible for planning, executing, and commissioning the company’s R&D projects. This position is the accountable party of R&D project execution efforts. They lead the project team consisting of multiple disciplines from across the R&D department, as well as outside consultants, engineering firms and construction firms. The PM is responsible for working with stakeholders to define the project scope; developing and maintaining the project schedule and budget; identifying and mitigating risks to the project; making sure that all project team members understand their roles and responsibilities; frequently communicating the project progress to stakeholders; ensuring the project team has sufficient resources to execute the project; and verifying the quality of the team’s work.  

Projects will be up to industrial scale, requiring strong logistical skills as these projects have many internal and external stakeholders and require consistent and clear communication. To be successful in this role, you will need to have managed industrial scale projects (with a project duration of 1 or more years), have managed multimillion to multibillion dollar budgets and taken projects from development through commissioning. It is preferred that you have experience performing earned value management and detailed risk analysis to make informed decisions about the direction of projects.  

In addition to the management of an R&D project, you will be assisting the Project Management Office (PMO) to further develop the project management methodologies for the company.   

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

 

Required 

  • 10 or more years of combined experience in the one or more of the following areas: project management (3 years minimum), project engineering, applied engineering or equivalent working experience.  
  • Experience managing various phases of highly complex capital projects from project origination through project closure 

  • Expert ability to lead all project management aspects, including schedule, cost, risk, stakeholders, etc. 

  • Experience in contract negotiations, contract management and contract closure 

  • Expert ability to be highly organized and manage work across multiple disciplines including subsurface, policy and regulatory, land, etc. 

  • Experience engaging with and managing vendors, consultants, and EPC firms 

  • Experience in utilizing project management software to plan and execute projects 

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and team motivation 

  • Demonstrated success in identifying and managing project risk 

  • Project Management skills, including the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines 

  • Strong communications skills including verbal, written, presentations, meeting facilitation and negotiation 

  • Ability to make effective presentations and communicate technical concepts to non-technical clients 

  • Ability to be adaptable in developing industry 

  • Excellent stakeholder management skills including the ability to manage multiple communication channels simultaneously  

  • Excellent communication skills, including active listening skills 

  • Bachelor’s degree 

Preferred 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent technical experience 

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is preferred. (If not certified, employee must obtain certification within 3 years) 

  • Working understanding of the subsurface 

  • Industrial-scale project management experience, such as electrical generation, chemical processing plants, or oil and gas development 

  • Experience managing EPC contracts 

  • Familiarity with gas compression, gas transmission or distribution infrastructure  

  • Expert in Microsoft Office suite of products, specifically Excel and Teams 

  • Experience working projects with project finance, especially tax equity structures 

  • Communicating and reporting project status to senior leadership  

  • Experience with project management software, such as Microsoft Project or Primavera P6 

 

Essential Responsibilities: 

     This position will be the project owner accountable and responsible for project success. Responsibilities include: 

  • Plan and execute R&D projects consisting of multi-year projects with capital budgets in excess of $5 million.  

  • Work with leadership to define and align project scope and objectives 

  • Meet agreed upon scope, cost, schedule and quality objectives set for project 

  • Provide ethical leadership 

  • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules to ensure timely delivery of project milestones. Communicate the project schedule to various stakeholders as required 

  • Identify and assess the critical path of the project, highlighting opportunities to execute project ahead of schedule 

  • Manage projects to achieve overall technical success in meeting the company’s business goals. This includes periodic reporting on project budget, forecast and actual costs 

  • Perform earned value management and provide metrics on project health. Utilize this information to make assessments on project direction and progress, adjusting as required to keep project on track 

  • Work collaboratively and positively with all functional areas involved in the project to ensure proper tasking and clear deliverables are communicated 

  • Perform risk analysis including quantitative analysis considering probability and impact to project (budget, timeline, scope, and quality). Work with the project team in identifying, assessing and mitigating known project risks. 

  • Identify and track issues and constraints that may impact the project 

  • Provide clear, accurate and frequent communications to internal and external project stakeholders, including providing periodic project status updates to leadership 

  • Set-up and maintain proper communication channels with and between stakeholders. Perform regular check-ins with stakeholders and formulate appropriate materials to update stakeholders. Manage stakeholder’s expectations and work with a diverse group of people to ensure effective communication 

  • Coordinate the preparation of the Project Charter, Project Management Plans, Scoping Documents, Risk Registers, and other standardized project management deliverables  

  • Organize, lead and document project team meetings to coordinate, update and hold team members accountable for project responsibilities 

  • Complete resource analyses appropriately to ensure sufficient resources to plan and execute project, both for internal and external resources 

  • Work with the procurement manager and project team to make sure appropriate materials and services are ordered, that they fit within the budget constraints, and help to track the related timeline. 

  • Maintain lessons learned for project. Perform post-mortem evaluations of issues that arise, and accurately collate and archive the information.  

 General Requirements and Job Details: 

  • Must be able to work at a computer for up to eight hours per day 

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States 

  • This position is based out of our Arvada, Colorado offices 

  • Infrequent travel to installation sites and venders maybe required 

  • This is a Monday through Friday, Full-Time, Exempt position with a salary range of $130,000- $150,000 per year.
