Job Description

About Nautilus.

Nautilus is building artificial intelligence to advance the efficiency of ocean commerce. We deliver technology to help shipping companies minimize fuel consumption, maximize operational efficiency, and optimize fleet performance. By arming ship owners and operators with real-time predictive decision support, Nautilus is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making global trade sustainable.

Ocean shipping consumes over $100 billion dollars of fuel every year, and up to 30% of it can be saved. For owner-operators, reliance on manually collected and analyzed data makes it difficult to optimize fleet performance in real-time. By providing a unified data platform that leverages machine learning, Nautilus helps its clients make better decisions to maximize the return on each ship and every voyage. For our clients, this means they drive closer collaboration, greater transparency, and stronger accountability across their global teams every day.

  About you.

We are hiring a Vice President of Engineering with a consistent track record of success in organizations shipping data-driven, B2B SaaS products at enterprise scale, to manage and scale our engineering team of Software Engineers. This role will be a member of our leadership team and will report directly to the CTO. This individual must want to make an impact, as we are mission-driven and customer-focused, and enjoy solving technically challenging problems.

As VP of Engineering, you will improve upon engineering processes, technical standards, hiring practices, and other efforts to scale every part of our business, including client acquisition and satisfaction. You should have prior organizational leadership experience in a high-growth startup and be an empathetic listener with the ability to connect with both engineers and cross-departmental leaders alike.

Outcomes for this role.

  • Define methods and metrics for ensuring operational excellence.

Proficiencies.
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience.
  • 5+ years of engineering leadership experience.
  • Experience managing managers, and developing first-time managers required: experience managing a remote workforce a plus.
  • Background or interest in data science/machine learning required: experience managing a team of both engineers and data scientists a plus.
  • You are a proven strategic problem solver & comfortable working in ambiguous environments with good judgment and skilled at making thoughtful decisions.
  • You are highly organized, detail-oriented and precise.
  • Previous experience working with stakeholders in product, people, and finance to create hiring strategies and experience building and growing high-performing teams.
  • A solid foundation in software design, data structures and algorithms.
  • Strong analytical and debugging skills.
  • Experience building a diverse team and sponsoring under-represented people.
  • Top-notch motivational skills used to align teams toward company goals and vision.
  • Experience spearheading OKRs for engineering teams and executing on them.
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, similar field of study or equivalent practical experience required.
