Rewiring America is a growing nonprofit working to launch a movement that electrifies everything, starting with our 121 million households. We are motivated by the fact that 90 percent of all emissions in the U.S. are energy related and 42 percent of those energy emissions come from the decisions we make in our homes: how we heat our air and water, cook our food, and dry our clothes, and what kind of cars we drive. Through accurate, accessible, and actionable data and storytelling tools that power smart, inclusive advocacy and market-transforming partnerships, Rewiring America aims to achieve national emissions goals, improve our health, lower monthly bills, and create millions of clean energy jobs. The Opportunity and Position Summary

We are seeking a passionate and resourceful Senior Communications Director to build and communicate our message to a diverse array of media stakeholders, from policy to general interest audiences, and across various sectors and demographics. This individual will articulate both policy and broader narratives to Rewiring America’s vast constituencies. This individual will play a key role in spreading the electrification gospel - to anyone and everyone - with skill and passion, and humor and energy!

The Senior Communications Director will be a key shaper of our story, ensuring our organizational vision, voice and brand is consistent and engaging across all public materials. Our work is to Electrify Everyone, and our Communications Director must understand how to compellingly charge up our audiences with great media strategy and (renewably) powerful language.

While deep sector expertise is not required, the Senior Communications Director must be able to gain fluency in our space, as we work to articulate nuanced policy, data and electrification goals with ahead of the curve agility and knowledge. The Communications Director understands this environment, and how to strategize, pitch and write compellingly for it.

The ideal candidate will have an intuition for content that draws in an audience, while simultaneously achieving measurable business goals. They will be detail oriented and most importantly will embrace the power of humor and humility, which are core to Rewiring America’s brand ethos. They must also be able to build and contribute to our engaging and ambitious team - we get things done, and have fun doing it.

This position reports to the Head of Communications and Brand, and will work closely with all teams across the organization. This individual will need to rein in our gratuitous use of electrification puns. It’s a task.

What You’ll do

Complete a variety of activities, including but not limited to:

  • Translate the organization’s values, vision, and mission into a best-in-class communications that amplifies our voice and deepens user engagement.
  • Find media hooks, pitch stories, and manage relationships with reporters and media partners.
  • Establish and drive a multi-channel communications strategy.
  • Prepare and manage all communications material.
  • Develop brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms.
  • Manage media relations and develop contacts with media members, influencers, and community leaders.
  • Support team with media briefs, talking points, key messages, media training and presentation decks.
  • Lead and manage a strong team of communicators, including writers, press secretary, and consultants, as necessary.
  • Assist in the creation of digital, video, audio and print content.
  • Track engagement across various platforms and make data-driven decisions.
  • Manage presence at industry events, trade shows and conferences.

Stay current on climate and market trends in order to generate new ideas and drive innovation.


Who You Are

The incoming Senior Communications Director will have the following education, experience, knowledge, skills and ability:

  • Strong commitment to the mission, policies and goals of Rewiring America.
  • 10+ years experience as a communications strategist for a political or advocacy organization, or related.
  • Solid political, climate and lifestyle communications know-how.
  • Experience pitching and placing stories.
  • Experience managing relationships with reporters and speaking on-the-record.
  • A track record of consistent wins and strong media relationships.
  • Experience building and managing a team preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of HTML and online publishing.
  • Keen understanding of digital media landscape and how to build a nimble comms team accordingly.
  • Knowledge of SEO and web traffic tools and metrics.
  • Experience managing social media channels, and comfort across all platforms.
  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills.
  • Ability to find new ways of telling stories, and clever ways to make complex information as succinct and interesting as it can be. These are fun and compelling stories to tell. Help us make them sing!
  • Detail-oriented work style.
  • Experience in a fast-paced, scaling organization or company.
  • Outstanding project management abilities to ensure that Rewiring America works in a highly collaborative, cross-functional, and synergistic manner.

The salary range for this position is $150,000-190,000 commensurate with experience. Rewiring America also offers a very generous and competitive benefits package, including 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance, 3% automatic contribution and 3% employer match on 401k contributions, pre-tax transportation benefits, and paid holidays, vacation, sick, and volunteer time off.
