About the role:

Cruise is looking for a Staff Technical Artist with a specialty in Materials creation to join our Simulation team! In this position, you will lead the charge to measure real- world materials and translate them into calibrated, photo- realistic digital representations for use in our real-time 3D virtual world. Additionally, you will help accelerate the efficiency of the art team by contributing tools and writing scripts to automate and streamline content creation processes. Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Work with artists and engineers to advance the state of the art in real time rendered simulations.
  • Assist artists and engineers via material and shader authoring, tool development, concept testing of new ideas, and building of rapid prototypes.
  • Participate in, standardize, and improve development processes for production of assets, materials, shaders, lighting rigs, asset streaming, collisions, and interactions.
  • Develop and implement technical and artistic techniques for materials, lighting, and similar tasks.
  • Actively participate in rendering optimizations.
  • Identify and troubleshoot content bugs.

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience as a technical artist (or equivalent capacity) in 3D games, simulators, or other high-performance real time systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of real-time rendering including physically-based rendering (PBR) pipelines, shader authoring in HLSL (or similar shader language) or shader graphs as well as shader performance profiling and optimization.
  • Production experience managing PBR material and lighting pipelines including: setting standards for material and texture libraries, calibrating material and lighting properties, capturing real- world materials as well as photogrammetry, and working with IES profiles.
  • Proven experience creating Python scripts to automate and streamline content creation and level authoring processes.
  • Real-time engine experience with scripting, workflows, asset assemblies and asset management. 
  • Strong 3D content pipeline knowledge with a deep understanding of modeling, texturing, and lighting.

Bonus points!

  • Unreal Engine 4 experience with blueprints and material editor is highly desirable.
  • Substance Designer material graph creation
  • Production experience lighting realistic 3D environments
  • Experience with HDR color grading or working with an ACES pipeline
  • Hands on experience with USD workflows and MDL materials
  • Experience rigging and skinning
  • Familiarity with C++ or C#
  • A portfolio or reel, including a detailed breakdown of your work in each section.
