Job Description

Come work at Smarter Sorting!

About You:

You are passionate about supporting a full product lifecycle and looking to do something new. You'd like to make your mark by supporting a world-class greentech product - one that not only drives the circular economy, but also improves the bottom line for retailers and suppliers.

Focused on two of our core products, the Back of Store Solution (BOSS) and Back of Truck Solution (BOTS), this Product Manager will understand the strategic market context for these products and ensure that they evolve to a place of stable, proactive growth and adapt with changing business and customer needs.

We're looking for an accountable, collaborative teammate with a Product background who can keep products working for existing customers while wearing multiple scrum-related hats in the development pod. To pull this off you will partner with the broader product, technology, support, and design teams to create solutions for customers. You will become a subject matter expert, not only on your product, but also about how it integrates into other pipelines. In your work you will deeply understand how to uncover customer needs using empathy and structured problem solving to unpack the stickiest issues and transform them into a world class product experience.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Understand BOSS & BOTS products including data flow and where they fit into our overall ecosystem both separately and together
  • Understand business needs for future development
  • Own feature development and sprint planning for BOSS & BOTS products
  • Collaborate with Account Management, Operations, Support, Design, Product & Tech teams to appropriately develop and prioritize features, including deprioritization when appropriate.
  • Act as Scrum master for BOSS / BOTS pod running daily standups, refinement, planning, and retrospectives
  • Eliminate blockers and communicate pertinent info between teams to drive projects and meet sprint commitments
  • Prioritize features to meet roadmap commitments
  • Triage bugs and support issues
  • Coordinate with Operations in preparing for product installation efforts
  • Proactively communicate issues, dependencies, updates, and release details across teams and to management as needed
  • Track velocity and team capacity to align sprint commitments and completion
  • Collect data on legacy products to inform strategy for sunsetting if needed
  • Understand which features are table stakes for a functional product / technology showcase, which are customizations, and how to keep existing customers satisfied with progress while minimizing burden on tech teams

Your Experience + Skills:

  • 4+ years technical project management experience
  • Strong understanding of SDLC and ability to break down systems into key components.
  • Knowledge and application of specific project management practices including efficiency, accountability, task dependencies and critical path
  • Process expertise in Scrum (and/or Kanban) ceremonies
  • Experience with project management platforms (Wrike, Jira, etc.)
  • Deep understanding of Tech & Product processes and how they interact with Support and other cross-team processes
  • Strong critical thinker with analytical problem solving skills and meticulous attention to detail
  • Willingness to ask questions
  • Ability to communicate (verbal and written) and collaborate effectively with people at all levels of the organization
  • Proven “roll up your sleeves and get it done” reputation in previous endeavors
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, document and communicate product features for internal and external audiences
  • Experience and/or understanding of retail or CPG industries
  • Demonstrated ability to grow and learn from mistakes (i.e. growth mindset)

Onboarding Goals

1st month:

  • Learn about Smarter Sorting’s products and begin to understand how those systems and our teams work together at a code level in order to eliminate blockers and communicate pertinent information between appropriate team members.
  • Embed yourself with the Account Management and Support teams to view our products and client relationships through multiple stakeholder lenses.
  • Track tasks on team sprint boards to identify and proactively nudge delinquent or problem tasks
  • Own scrum ceremonies for your development pod

3+ months:

  • Understand product features and roadmap well enough to write user stories, breaking down tasks into manageable chunks
  • Be equipped with enough feature knowledge and task tracking to report risks to sprint commitments as they arise
  • Begin to understand the difference between smoke & fire when triaging user reported issues to appropriately resolve and enhance when necessary.

6 months:

  • Resident expert on existing product suite, how they function, where they are headed, and how they fit into an API-centric future.
  • Become the point person for respective scrum teams tech content, statuses, and problem solving
  • Facilitate Scrum values and practices to allow teams to meet sprint commitments consistently

What does success look like? The Product Manager will know they are successful in the role when the BOSS/BOTS team is delivering commitments as expected by key partners and is sought after in the organization to lead our next major initiative based on their initial successes.
