Job Description

As a key member of Mad Capital’s Credit team, you will be responsible for broad-based analysis and servicing of a variety of different types of commercial loans for regenerative organic farmers.

What This Means

  • Work with purpose - This is an opportunity to make a deep impact and meaningfully contribute to the growth of a thriving organization in the business of helping regenerative organic farmers. For most of us, work is one of the largest time commitments we will ever make. In joining Mad Capital, you’ll find a team of smart and caring professionals invested in building something bigger than themselves.
  • Generous compensation - You work hard and will be compensated for it. The minimum base salary for this role starts at $60K per year. Mad Capital determines a candidate's compensation package throughout the interview process based on experience, expertise, and other factors and the final compensation package will be discussed with you during the interview process.
  • Company ownership - You will share in the company’s success. All full-time compensation plans include a meaningful ownership stake in the company in the form of stock options.
  • Stress-free benefits - We don’t want you worrying about your health or the well-being of your family. We offer fully-paid health insurance, a 401(k), and 12 weeks of fully-paid parental leave.
  • Required time off - Employees are expected to take all bank holidays off and are required to take at least 1 week of mandatory vacation per quarter. We’re very flexible, but we’ve found that a minimum requirement helps ensure folks take much-deserved time for themselves.
  • Development support - Mad Capital is deeply committed to the personal and professional development of all team members. We support this work with mentorships, community introductions, brown bags, tuition assistance and a flexible work schedule so you can fit it all in.
  • New friends - Here at Mad Capital we’re building a team composed of people we like and want to spend time with. People from different paths who think about the world a little differently and challenge others to do the same. We’re constantly planning company trips, get-togethers, and learning opportunities.

Primary Activities

  • Credit Analysis - Accurately and efficiently underwrite commercial agricultural loans in a sound manner to existing and prospective borrowers according to company standards and procedures:
    • Analyze financial statements from various sources. Interpret financial data to extract key insights. Formulate and incorporate KPIs into analysis as needed.
    • Perform detailed collateral analysis and appraisal review.
    • Assist our Partnerships team with loan structuring on an ad hoc basis, including periodic interaction with external partners such as FSA, EDCs, and extension offices.
    • Collaborate with loan officers and senior managers to arrive at decisive, consensus-based credit decisions that serve the best interests of the borrowers, and the interests of the organization through accurate PD recommendations.
    • Prepare and post completed packages for committee approval, and actively participate in committee deliberations.
    • Underwrite actions for distressed and criticized accounts when needed.
  • Portfolio Management - Assist Mad Capital with portfolio performance monitoring:
    • Underwrite actions for distressed and criticized accounts when needed.
    • Formulate appropriate loan covenants and conditions at the time of approval.
    • Assist with completion of regular internal audits of both the portfolio and of specific transactions.
  • Effective Communication - Provide and receive feedback from internal and external stakeholders in a timely, efficient, and respectful manner:
    • Lending opportunities are originated by our Partnerships team. You should have the ability to quickly develop rapport with Partnership loan officers so that loan narratives can be completed jointly in an efficient manner. Quickly and respectfully flag issues, run down loose ends, and ensure nuance is captured in loan files.
    • Communicate turn time expectations back to loan officers so that they can ensure a superlative borrower experience.
    • Be an excellent writer. Draft loan narratives with concise language that clearly and accurately describes borrower trends, management experience, and production practices. Dedication to the Oxford comma is a must.

This has translated into a thorough understanding of agricultural lending principles and practices as well as commercial loan products. You also have familiarity with relevant organizations in the agricultural finance and production spaces.
  • Analytics chops - You have strong credit and analytical skills. You’re not afraid to jump into borrower financials, build a model, calculate relevant ratios, conduct sensitivity analyses, and write-up your findings and recommendations.
  • Research markets - We work across the United States, lending to farmers producing different goods and services. You’ll be expected to be proficient at collecting industry and company data through a variety of channels, including research firms, internal and external databases, trade publications, web scraping, expert networks, and other online sources.
  • You’ll jump on the phone - Success in this role is dependent on effective internal and external communication. We’re looking for strong written and verbal communication skills and a demonstrated ability to productively and respectively engage with others. Prior sales experience is a huge plus.
