Climate Data Engineer- Climate Solutions:Integrating our global climate accounting
Open Earth Foundation is a California-based research and deployment non-profit developing open innovative technology to increase planetary resilience and avoid a catastrophic climate crisis. 
We are a diverse international team, working with a network of collaborators and partners globally (from the United Nations to cutting-edge startups) and always ready to have fun saving the world. 
We are building open infrastructure for the Paris Agreement, energy finance, biodiversity tracking, and impact solutions at the intersection of emergent technologies (ML, blockchain, Web3 technologies, IoT devices) and climate innovations. 
We have funding, a network of international partners and a team of experts focused on Earth systems and digital innovation. Now we need Climate Avengers to help us on our planetary mission.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it: As a climate data engineer you will provide research, leadership and hands-on data management in our climate accounting technology programs. Your work will cover climate data expertise across Earth system science (particularly carbon budgets), international climate accounting (eg. GHG Inventories, UNFCCC process, and Paris’ Global Stocktake) and non-state actor climate strategies (eg. corporate and city-scale accounting). 
This is a significant opportunity for a skilled, agile, experienced and creative data scientist to have a hand in developing the position into a dynamic management and action role with an exciting new climate technology innovation nonprofit.
You will work directly with the Executive Director, be the top climate expert in a digital R&D lab with 5-10 members, and work on up to 4 different simultaneous climate data and accounting development operations; involving in-house work and managing multiple external collaborators. 
The position is remote (we value time zones closer to Pacific Time) and we will consider part-time collaborators. 

The ideal candidate: a passionate researcher on Earth system science and data

  • The ideal candidate will have broad knowledge and experience in available global climate datasets, integrated assessment models, climate markets, MRV (monitoring, reporting and verification) and accounting methodologies.
  • Candidates ideally have a restless passion for climate data technology infrastructure and significantly improving global climate tracking processes with automation through cutting edge digital technology.
  • Knowledge and experience in big data, machine learning and AI for climate use-cases is desired. 

Responsibilities: manage, research, code, calculate, engage

  • Oversee all climate research, datasets, developments and deployments for the Open Climate project.
  • Ensure all in-house and outsourced technology development of Open Climate is designed to provide support to the Paris Agreement tracking process.
  • Manage the climate science vision and mission of the Open Climate program, including for the independent climate accounting network for the Global Stocktake, the Nested Climate Accounting spatial web simulator, the North American Energy Certification pilot, and model registry development for the voluntary carbon market. 
  • Provide strategic direction, scientific assessment, stakeholder management and data management for an independent climate accounting network for the Global Stocktake.
  • Engage, manage and expand climate data and technology collaborations with multiple stakeholders including academic groups, NGOs, supranational entities, corporations and startups.
  • Source and handle climate datasets for the different project developments.
  • Curate all climate data code and documentation in the Foundation’s GitHub repository, and documentation platforms like GitBook. 
  • Provide climate domain expertise to all Open Earth’s digital product development processes.
  • Supervise all climate prompts in the Open Climate Collabathon.
  • Co-author publications on research & deployment outcomes in the form of whitepapers, reports and peer-reviewed articles. Provide strong thought leadership on Earth System Science, IPCC process, UNFCCC Paris Agreement, Digital MRV, Climate Data Technology, Voluntary Carbon Markets

Technology & Data Abilities:

  • Understanding of Integrated Assessment Models (eg. CMIP, Magicc)
  • Data pipeline, transformation and handling (Python, Matlab, R)
  • SQL Database creation, table and schema handling
  • Database catalog management
  • Data visualization tools (eg. Pandas, Matplotlib etc.)
  • Machine learning and AI tools (eg. Tensorflow)
  • GIS packages and approaches
  • Git & version control

Interpersonal skills: A time-zone management master, clear communicator, creative and curious, attention to detail

  • Clear communicator with good verbal and written skills in English (additional languages a plus)
  • Creative, flexible and efficient with a focus on details
  • Capacity to work with team members and partners at all levels and across time zones in a highly collaborative and often remote environment. 
  • Ability to embrace new challenges, take ownership and initiative as a key team player. 

Qualifications:

  • Ideal formal training includes academic institutions, startup, consulting, and UNFCCC COP events.
  • A minimum of five years with ideally 10 years of progressively responsible experience in data science, climate research and development
