Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Energize Colleges Fellow oversees program implementation and student intern mentorship for the Energize Colleges program at the San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD). Funded by an innovative partnership through Peninsula Clean Energy, the successful candidate will supervise, coach, and manage a group of ten passionate student interns engaged in energy efficiency, equity, and sustainability efforts in the community. Under the general direction of the Energy and Sustainability Manager, the Fellow will design and guide the program through the stages of partner outreach, intern recruitment, administration, intern supervision, and reporting on program deliverables. This role is a 10-month, full-time position with numerous opportunities to creatively drive campus sustainability engagement, workforce development, and student empowerment through sustainability education and project-based learning.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the recruitment, placement, and project implementation of twelve student interns. 
  • Collaborate with on- and off-campus internship hosts, forging strong connections to ensure high-quality placements and experiences for student interns.
  • Work closely with students throughout their internships, ensuring timely completion of key internship tasks and deliverables.
  • Support Energize Colleges program tracking, reporting, and grant administration.
  • Identify and connect with campus faculty interested in building academic projects focused on energy, equity, and sustainability, and infusing those concepts and activities into new and existing academic coursework.
  • Assist participating faculty members with instructional planning, lesson development, direct instruction, and evaluation related to such academic projects; accurately track academic projects’ progress.
  • Identify and develop new opportunities to utilize the campus as a living lab for academic learning.
  • Identify & connect with faculty staff as technical project advisors for in-house interns.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An educational background in a sustainability-related field (volunteer and internship experience will also be considered)
  • Passion for sustainability engagement with students and communities 
  • Commitment to supporting equitable student learning outcomes and professional development
  • An emerging understanding of (or desire to learn about) clean energy and environmental policy
  • Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills 
  • Interest or experience planning, leading, and promoting outreach events or educational workshops
  • Experience using social media and website design platforms (Instagram, Google Sites) and/or graphic design experience (Canva, Adobe Suite) is a plus
  • Curious and open to learning, creative, detail oriented, patient, flexible

 

CLIMATE CORPS QUALIFICATIONS

  • Availability for the full-time, 10-month Fellowship program, beginning in September 2021
  • Climate Corps Fellows must have completed a 4-year degree by the time the program cycle starts in September 2021. 
  • A connection to the placement location. This is an equal opportunity position and we prefer to place a candidate who already lives in the region being served.
  • Experience in and the drive to address racism and create race equity with the team members and programmatically.

ABOUT SAN MATEO COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT

The San Mateo County Community College District is a community college system in California with three institutions: College of San Mateo in San Mateo, Cañada College in Redwood City, and Skyline College in San Bruno. The district serves more than 25,000 students each day with both day and evening classes. This Fellowship will be housed in the Facilities Maintenance, Operations and Planning Division, the Sustainability Team which has hosted over nineteen Fellows over the past eight years.
