Job Description

EnergyHub’s platform orchestrates more than a million enrolled grid-edge devices – including thermostats, electric vehicles, and batteries – to help utilities intelligently manage grid load. Our software helps keep the grid running reliably while enabling more renewable energy and reducing the grid’s reliance on fossil fuels.

As part of EnergyHub’s DevOps team, you’ll help build the foundations, tools, and processes the rest of our engineering team uses to develop and run the EnergyHub platform in production. We are running at scale and helping our utility customers to deliver service to millions of people each and every day.

What You’ll Get To Do

  • Increase developer throughput and happiness by improving processes and tooling for deployment, observability, monitoring, and alerting
  • Design ways to enhance the safety, security, and reliability of our system while keeping costs appropriate
  • Help guide the team in design, planning, and implementation of new features
  • Figure out which new technologies and tools are the right fit for our platform
  • Identify and advocate for ways we can keep enhancing our security
  • Enable other engineers on your team to grow and be successful
  • Engage with complex problems that reach across the organization and require strong collaboration
  • Build the right tooling to make your own job easier

What Skills You’ll Bring

  • You’ve managed AWS all the way from security groups to organizations.
  • You like to manage all your infrastructure as code.
  • You know your way around container build and deployment processes (i.e. Docker).
  • You’re comfortable on the command line, can hack together a decent shell script, and have solid fundamentals of Linux system administration.
  • You have a good understanding of core networking concepts such as TCP/IP, routing, and DNS.
  • You’ve worked with monitoring and alerting systems and you have strategies for keeping signal-to-noise ratios high.
  • You have experience administering declarative CI/CD workflows in one tool or another.
  • You can write useful Python or another high-level, general-purpose programming language.
  • You stay on top of industry developments and have a good overall sense of the DevOps solution space.
  • Bonus: you’ve worked on compliance efforts for audit frameworks such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001.

What Tools We Use

  • AWS. Lots of AWS.
  • gitops > clickops
  • CloudFormation
  • Terraform
  • Elastic Container Service, but we have an open mind about other options
  • Ansible for the few things that aren’t running in containers
  • Datadog and CloudWatch for observability, plus PagerDuty for incident management and alerting
  • GitHub Actions and a decreasing amount of Travis CI
  • Both relational and non-relational databases, including MongoDB and MySQL
  • Python for internal tooling

You Should Definitely Apply If

  • You believe in EnergyHub’s mission to empower utilities and their customers to create a carbon-free, distributed energy future.
  • You love to build reliable systems that are easy for other engineers to adopt and use.
  • You get satisfaction from making things a little bit better each and every day.
  • You’re excited to join a growing engineering team and help shape its future.

The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $160,000 + equity. Base pay offered may vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills and experience.

Why work for EnergyHub?

  • Be part of something important: Help create the future of how energy is produced and consumed. Make a positive impact on our climate.
