We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Metrology and Characterization Engineer to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. As a Metrology and Characterization Engineer you will invent, develop, optimize, validate and scale up inspection tools and methods for our electrolyzer manufacturing processes. You will work within a cross-functional engineering team responsible for product and process development lifecycles, and accelerate our launch into manufacturing.

You will be a key enabler of product and process quality by working with different groups at the company to define and implement inspection points across our manufacturing processes. You will dive into the technical details of the product to develop inspection methods and the metrology equipment needed to perform these inspections at scale. Your contributions will ensure we are manufacturing a safe and robust product.

This position will be in Natick, MA. This is an onsite position with some travel necessary to other sites.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive the development of innovative inline manufacturing metrology from proof-of-concept to high-volume production and to enable improved processing, performance, quality, and cost.
  • Work with R&D and process stakeholders to define inspection points and methods to ensure the reliability of the product and manufacturing process.
  • Develop IQC, IPQC, & FQC requirements and set metrics on analyzing performance
  • Expect a hands-on approach with pilot process equipment to understand the process fundamentals and use that knowledge to continuously improve metrology
  • Drive metrology installation and commissioning on new production lines and interact with suppliers
  • Define inspection specifications required for enabling gauge capable metrology tools to support production processes.
  • Perform gauge capability/R&R, tool matching, and measurement uncertainty studies for metrology tools
  • Support metrology measurements for engineering DOEs for process optimization
  • Train technicians on the maintenance and repair of the inline metrology systems
  • Be able work on metrology equipment as necessary.
  • Drive advanced statistics, data analysis, interpretation, and presentation of experimental data proficiently
  • Investigate and resolve problems arising during inline metrology integration into production process to ensure seamless interaction between process and product.
  • Build metrology documentation to accurately define the process for cross-functional teams (equipment, quality, production, etc.)
  • Work closely with Corporate Quality, Supplier Quality, and other Quality Organizations to align on common procedures and systems that need to be coherent across the Company

Minumum Qualifications

  • Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in a STEM related field such as Materials Science, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, Automation Engineering, or other. Advance degrees are a plus!
  • 3+ years of relevant metrology experience, including metrology development and fundamentals of the methodology, gauge capability, process capability
  • Experience with optics and optical sensor development working with a broad range of wavelengths from infrared to UV
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development
  • Familiar with Six sigma concepts such as process and gauge capability concepts and requirements
  • Familiar with process failure modes and effects analysis (PFMEA)
  • Familiar with at least one statistical software package (e.g JMP, Minitab)
  • Familiar with query building for exporting data from databases (e.g. MySQL, Flux), )
  • Familiar with at least one programming language for data processing (e.g. Python)
  • Strong communication and presentation skills and ability to simplify complicated concepts for non-technical and cross-functional team members

Compensation & Benefits

Actual base salary offered to the hired applicant will be determined based on their work location, level, qualifications, job-related skills, as well as relevant education or training and experience.​
