Do you want to make a major contribution to this part of the energy economy? Join us on our mission as we transform energy storage to enable a more sustainable future.  We are looking to add a Senior SEM/FIB Microscopy Engineer - Senior Member Technical Staff (SMTS), specializing in training and development, to our team. The ideal candidate has a passion for microscopy, mentoring, team development, and continuous improvement.  NOTE - This is a hands-on role and is NOT eligible for remote/hybrid work, as the job duties cannot be performed remotely and are required to be performed onsite.


  • Train area personnel on tool operation, sample handling, sample tracking, and internal systems
  • Promote a constant culture of learning, upskilling, and development both for individuals and team
  • Own area documentation, Best Known Practices (BKPs), procedures, single-point lessons, and training materials
  • Develop, quantify, and standardize performance and quality metrics for team member evaluation and comparison
  • Perform periodic internal audits of area work, ensuring high quality performance
  • Recommend and act on improvement opportunities based on direct observation and customer feedback
  • Ensure area compliance to both company and industry standards, serving as the representative for internal and external audits
  • Hold trainees, peers, and leadership accountable to quality standards and area procedures


  • Organized, meticulous, and have clear written and verbal communication skills
  • Motivated by new challenges and embraces learning new techniques
  • Demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness allowing smooth adaptation to a constantly evolving environment and work priorities
  • Comfortable working with computer quality systems and databases
  • Possesses a can-do spirit and is a collaborative teammate and clear communicator
  • Ability and flexibility to work evenings and weekends; to coordinate program issues, provide training, or cover potential shift gaps


  • B.S. degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related field plus 5 years industry experience; 3 years of industry experience with MS degree; or a PhD degree
  • Experience training and mentoring others either in an academic or industrial setting
  • Experience with analytical tools such as FIB/SEM and sample preparation
  • Safely handle chemicals and dispose of hazardous waste
  • Ability to perform work in a glovebox, dry room, and fume hood 


  • Proficiency using laboratory inventory management (LIMS) software(s)
  • Knowledge and understanding of ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 quality standards
  • Direct experience with 5S programs
  • Experience working with a Li-ion battery or analytical test lab
  • Demonstrated experience preparing samples in an inert environment, such as glovebox operations, sample preparation (e.g. electrode depositions)


  • Work is performed in a dry room, fume hood, lab area, or glovebox requiring the use of fine motor skills
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Reaching and twisting motions with hands
  • Lifting up to 25 lbs.
