Job Summary

The Design Engineer is responsible for ideating and maintaining CAD documentation for our mechanical systems on our autonomous vehicles. This role will be a part of the Manufacturing Engineering team, but will work closely with our Mechanical Engineering team and our Production Technicians. Success for this role is engaging with our systems of continuous improvement to deliver unique solutions that improve our quality and decrease overall cost. The Design Engineer will assist May Mobility in scaling from in-house builds to supporting global manufacturing vendors.

Essential Functions

  • Primary contributor to design ideation and refinement from problem statement to fully manufacturable solutions. 
  • Perform Initial studies of problem statements,  research design briefs, and requirements
  • Consistent Ideation of new design that consider serviceability, manufacturing impact, and safety of a design
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineering and Production teams
  • Modify, release, and maintain 2d and 3d Documentation per May Mobility Engineering Standards.
  • Communicate and present progress to senior engineers and  project managers
  • Participate in cross disciplinary design reviews and pin ups with various internal stakeholders
  • Ideate and iterate components designs to reduce cost, improve quality, and reduce manufacturing time
  • Maintain knowledge base of best practices and requirements

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Success in this role typically requires the following competencies:

  • Ability to clearly communicate process through technical work instruction creation
  • Excellent communication among multiple stakeholders and project managers
  • Knowledge and ability to apply ASME Y14.5 drawing standards 
  • Comfortable creating rapid prototypes with various shop tools, including 3d printers

 

Education and Experience

Candidates most successful in this role typically hold the following qualifications or comparable knowledge:

  • 2 years of experience as a Design Engineer or similar technical discipline
  • Associates/ bachelors degree in Engineering or related field
  • Experience using computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-assisted engineering (CAE) software (Solidworks 2019 or newer specifically)
  • PDM experience, 3D experience, teamcenter or other

  • Standard office working conditions which includes but is not limited to:
    • Prolonged sitting
    • Prolonged computer use
