Job Description

Tomorrow.io’s Space & Sensors team is responsible for the development of radar systems, satellites, and the overall satellite constellation in support of Tomorrow.io’s Operation Tomorrow Space effort. The ultimate goal of Operation Tomorrow Space is to collect and downlink real-time weather data to be integrated seamlessly into Tomorrow.io’s existing forecasting and modeling systems. Global weather coverage will not only revolutionize global weather intelligence, but will also provide lifesaving weather information to 5 billion people across the globe who currently don’t have access to radar coverage. Furthermore, observations from Tomorrow.io’s spaceborne radars and radiometers will have enormous impact on the global climate observing system, providing measurements of clouds, precipitation, humidity, and temperature with unprecedented spatiotemporal coverage.

We are looking for a Radar Scientist who'll contribute to the development of an operational data processing pipeline for Tomorrow.io’s precipitation radar satellites. This includes traversing radar system design through detailed observation simulations of volumetric and surface scattering in order to assess hardware performance, developing calibration/validation methods for Level 1 radar data products,  and implementing real-time processing algorithms to enable rapid assimilation into Tomorrow.io’s operational forecasting products.

As a Radar Scientist at Tomorrow.io, you will develop, maintain, and enhance Tomorrow.io’s suite of radar simulation software and signal processing algorithms, and process measurements from airborne and spaceborne radar platforms in the application of weather monitoring.

What you'll do:

  • Develop, test, and implement data processing algorithms to process Level 0 measurements into calibrated Level 1 data products
  • Quantify random and systematic radar measurement error and geolocation accuracy
  • Work through calibration and validation of radar measurements from Tomorrow.io’s satellite constellation, including the use of spaceborne, airborne, and ground-based datasets
  • Develop and utilize measurement simulation tools to support design trades in instrument development, transmit waveform parameter selection, and receiver data processing.

What you'll need:

  • A Ph.D. in physics, mathematics, engineering, or comparable field with application in atmospheric science
  • Background in remote sensing instrument development and/or low-level data processing, preferably in the field of weather/climate monitoring (experience in remote sensing from spaceborne platforms is a plus)
  • Broad technical depth with proclivity to identify key problems and formulate and implement sound scientific/engineering solutions
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts through presentations, technical reports, and journal articles
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary teams, including both software and hardware development
  • Knowledge of microwave/millimeter systems (block diagrams, link budgets, nonlinearities) and digital signal processing principles and analysis methods (Experience with hardware testing is a plus)
  • Python or matlab expertise (required), high-performance computing, cloud-based computing, and git experience a plus
  • Expertise in two (required) or more (desired) of the following areas: (1) pulse compression radar systems; (2) antenna analysis and design; (3) full-wave electromagnetic and/or radiative transfer numerical methods; (4) analysis of thermal and phase noise in transceiver systems; (5) weather radar estimators and sampling statistics

If your experience is close but doesn’t fulfill all requirements, please apply. Tomorrow.io  is on a mission to build a special company. To achieve our goal, we are focused on hiring people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States lawfully must be provided

This position requires access to technology that is controlled under U.S. export control laws and regulations. Accordingly, this position is restricted to U.S. citizens, permanent residents and protected individuals unless and until any required licenses are obtained.
