The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an international nonprofit environmental organization with more than 3 million members and online supporters. Since 1970, our lawyers, scientists, and other environmental specialists have worked to protect the world's natural resources, public health, and the environment. For two decades, NRDC has been a thought leader and trusted adviser to our partners in China. With a highly effective team of more than 40 people based in our Beijing office, NRDC China Program have worked hard at both the national and local levels to recommend, develop, and help implement innovative laws, policies, technologies, and market tools that conserve natural resources, curb pollution and accelerate China's transition to a clean, low-carbon economy. According to Chinese law, NRDC's Beijing Representative Office is registered under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and supervised by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China.
NRDC is seeking a China Ocean Conservation Research Assistant to work in our Beijing office to support our ocean conservation work. Supporting ocean conservation within China’s domestic waters will help achieve food security goals and promote ocean health. This is a full-time position for a period of two years. It is jointly supervised by NRDC’s China Program and its U.S.-based Oceans Program. The China Ocean Conservation Research Assistant will work closely with the project managers of NRDC’s China fisheries and marine protected area projects and remotely with a team of ocean policy experts in NRDC’s New York office.
The China Ocean Conservation Research Assistant’s work will focus on promoting sustainable fisheries and marine protected areas (MPAs), including supporting the implementation of pilot fishery management projects, summarizing best practices, laws and policies related to fisheries and MPAs, and helping to analyze different approaches for integrating scientific and technical information into ocean management. The work will involve research and report writing, plus work with key stakeholders, academic institutions, scientists, and non-governmental organizations. The position presents an excellent opportunity to build new skills, learn about China’s and other countries’ ocean conservation policies, and develop professional relationships with experts in China and abroad.
