Job Description

Welcome to Planet. We believe in using space to help life on Earth.

Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.

Customers and users across the globe use Planet's data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world’s toughest obstacles.

As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains.

We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Join Planet and be a part of our mission to change the way people see the world.

Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, and The Netherlands.

About the Role:

We’re seeking a Director for Government Affairs in Germany who can directly and fully engage in the German policy, budget, and legislative environments in several venues - with the federal or state governments directly, at conferences or symposia, or at meetings of German institutions, like the National Earth Observation and Copernicus Forum. The right person for Planet knows how to navigate the complex relationships of the German government, both on the federal and land levels; has professional experience working with these institutions and detailed knowledge of their processes; and, knows how Planet’s unique capabilities - our agile approach to space technology and our online delivery of a first-of-its-kind data set - meet the requirements and needs of European governments and civil society.

This position requires close coordination with both internal and external constituencies, and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with Planet’s customers, potential government funders, NGOs, technical partners and team members around the world, in a highly-dynamic, high-growth commercial company. Planet’s services are novel, and thus we are looking for someone to simultaneously educate stakeholders on the broader context of the commercial aerospace opportunities while also specifically understanding short-term opportunities for Planet.

Impact You’ll Own:

  • Demonstrate thought leadership in the German policy community
  • Communicate Planet’s unique value proposition to the German audience in terms of greatest relevance to that audience, with the ability to design and synthesize new kinds of analysis rather than copy existing approaches
  • Produce visualizations that express Planet’s impact and captivate audiences of all types
  • Communicate back to Planet’s Policy and European leadership opportunities for growth to align with future Planet European investment

What You Bring:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills both in German and in English
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • A record of strong achievement and relevant experience in the private and public sector in Germany. A minimum of 5 years of experience is expected
  • Excellent project, time, and budget management skills, and being able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously without sacrificing attention to detail
  • Outstanding communication (speaking and writing), interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • A mixture of high energy, flexibility and team orientation with a direct, honest, and respectful approach to problem solving, and an ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a high-growth, commercial company
  • An ability to work closely with organizations in a wide variety of sectors
  • A deep interest and passion for creating a vibrant 21st century German space/data ecosystem
  • A deep interest in and passion for Planet and its overall mission

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Direct and recent experience in Berlin and Germany with the German public institutions including but not limited to federal and state ministries, Bundeskanzleramt, Bundestag, Umweltbundesamt, BKG, BGR, Thünen Institute, etc
  • Direct and recent experience with DLR
  • Direct and recent experience working on space/data policy
  • Experience in drafting white and position papers
  • Direct and recent experience in forming alliances and partnerships with the EO industry on mutual objectives

Benefits While Working at Planet:

  • Additional company winter holidays and regular global days off
  • Remote friendly work environment and flexible working hours
  • Contribution to our growth by offering equity options for employees
  • Giving back to the community - one day per quarter for charitable work
  • Learning and Tuition Reimbursement
  • Regular hack-weeks and meetup events to exchange knowledge
  • Home office budget
  • Employee Resource Groups providing empowering spaces for connection and mentorship
