Job Description

The world is facing a nature crisis. We have lost 85% of the world’s wetlands, 35% of its forests and 65% of its living creatures. Action on nature is the next frontier for sustainability, as the world has to move beyond net zero to nature positive future. NatCap Research is at the forefront of this movement. We help organisations measure and enhance the environmental benefits of their land, and take nature-positive action informed by cutting-edge science.

The company was founded in 2018 and in a short period, we have grown to serve 30 major organisations. We are now scaling up to bring our solution to the world.

As a Senior Software Engineer joining our small team, you will own the infrastructure and tooling that underpins our data Catalog. Our scientists build and run models from this data, and deliver impactful insights and recommendations to our clients. We’re building a suite of products on top of the Catalog too, so it’s absolutely central to NatCap. You will support high quality, consistent, easy-to-use, versioned datasets and a CI/CD pipeline for data preparation. By enabling our scientists to be confident in their data, you’ll help make our reporting reproducible and rigorous.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with our science team to understand their needs
  • Work with the CTO to design, rapidly prototype and build our GIS data platform
  • Build pipelines, CI and tooling for ingestion, preparation and storage of raster and vector datasets
  • Build high quality tooling and develop good abstractions to keep the team productive as we modify and improve the data platform

We’re looking for:

  • You have multiple years experience in an engineering role
  • You have experience with one of more of: remote sensing, handling and processing scientific image data (ideally from satellites), and/or manipulating geospatial datasets
  • You have hands-experience with AWS or GCP
  • You are comfortable with Python, and are willing to learn new technologies to work with our science team (we also use R extensively)
  • You are experienced with DevOps practices, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and CI/CD (GitHub Actions)
  • You are a superb communicator, both written and verbal, and are comfortable collaborating across disciplines. You work to create clarity for others.
  • You are happy getting your hands dirty outside of your role or comfort zone, if needed

What you get:

  • Opportunity to build a fast-growing company
  • Chance to quickly grow personally and professionally
  • Chance to contribute to the world’s leading solution to the nature crisis

This role reports to the CTO. We believe that working from home unlocks huge productivity and collaboration is best in person, so this role is hybrid: we’d like you to be able to come to our office in London for 2 days each week.

Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us. We want to match your experience with the correct salary.
