Where in the world of OVO will I be working?

Within the Energy function, this role will report into the Operations & Analytics Manager as part of the Portfolio Management team. The Operations & Analytics team is responsible for ensuring Trading, Finance and other business areas have an accurate view of OVO’s wholesale positions and exposures in order to enable effective purchasing, understand performance, drive change and support business decision-making.

What will I be doing?

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with three other analysts.

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:-

• Operating and maintaining business-critical processes to monitor OVO’s wholesale energy positions and exposures.
• Ensuring agreed hedging strategies are correctly implemented, helping to set up new processes where required.
• Liaising with Pricing, Commercial, Data Science and Portfolio Management to ensure that customer number forecasts appropriately reflect OVO’s growth strategy and risk appetite. 
• Developing tools to provide clear insight on the performance of wholesale energy trading activities over both past and future periods. 
• Calculating the allocation and reconciliation of wholesale costs and trading performance for financial reporting and forecasting.
• Working with the dedicated Trading Tech team to automate and improve existing processes and tools.
• Providing analytical support to other parts of the Energy team to enable the effective management of a wide range of risks.

Is this the job for me?

This role will suit someone with an analytical mindset who is comfortable manipulating large data sets to produce clear and cogent insights. Market volatility and regulatory change mean there is always something new happening, and you will need to be able to thrive and adapt in the face of changing priorities. 

You will be a self-starter, comfortable working both autonomously and with colleagues to deliver value in a small, high-functioning team, and be able to feed into our response to complex challenges.

You will need to develop a detailed understanding of existing models and processes, and demonstrate flexibility in contributing to their development and on a changing range of our team’s priority tasks. Your work will be clearly presented and repeatable in order to maximise the efficiency of the team.

Ideally you will have

• A numerate, analytical or science-based degree and/or at least a year’s experience in a numerate or analytical field.
• The ability to logically think through the implications of changes and identify associated risks and opportunities.
• Close attention to detail and the ability to proactively identify potential issues before they cause problems.
• Experience with data manipulation in at least one coding language (we work with SQL, Python and BigQuery).
• Experience with data visualisation tools such as Tableau.

Beneficial

• Experience in the UK energy sector, trading or risk management.
• Understanding of version control and continuous integration software, such as Github and Circle CI.
• Exposure to automated workflow systems, such as Apache Airflow and Google’s Cloud Composer.
