About Us

Sunstone Credit (“Sunstone”) is on a mission to revolutionize commercial solar finance and energy transition finance.

Sitting at the intersection of climate, finance and technology, Sunstone is opening the door to a previously underserved segment in the solar industry by offering financing solutions that help businesses save money and reduce their carbon footprint by going solar and owning their own systems.

Founded in 2021 by successful serial founders, Sunstone has a strong backing from top VC firms and financial institutions that position our company for explosive growth in 2023 and beyond.

We have partners and customers that are diverse, and we are building a team that reflects that.  Our team members can choose to work from either our Baltimore or NYC office, and every one of our colleagues shares in Sunstone’s success with meaningful equity ownership.

Climate change is the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced.  We are doing our part to stop it.  This is not just a job, it’s a mission – true believers only.  Come join our team!

About the Role

The Accounting Associate is a critical role with Sunstone Credit. As part of the Accounting and Finance team, you will work directly with the Controller and VP of Finance to lead various operational tasks in relation to loan servicing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash, prepaids, journal entries and financial reporting. However, your role will not be limited to operations – you will have broad exposure across all areas of the business as you work with senior leaders to ensure Sunstone constantly offers excellent service and financial product innovation for our customers and partners. You may be involved in strategic initiatives, including establishing new partnerships, lending structures, and loan products. Experience working in renewables finance, lending, banking or financial services, private equity or debt, or asset management would be helpful for this role.

As the Accounting Associate, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing all external and internal financial reporting, including reporting to senior leadership, investors, and bank partners as needed. Candidate must have a strong interest in the nuts and bolts of financial operations, be client service oriented, be a team player with a positive attitude and a strong work ethic, be well organized with exceptional attention to detail and communication skills, and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where everyone wears more than one hat and is expected to go beyond the scope of the job description to ensure Sunstone’s success. We are a startup with a great culture and entrepreneurial spirit – we like to work hard AND have fun while solving big challenges in renewable finance. The successful candidate will share our enthusiasm!

Responsibilities and Skills for the Role

  • Bring a creative, entrepreneurial mindset and be prepared to apply your accounting and finance knowledge to solving diverse problems
  • Ensure that all accounting records are maintained in accordance with GAAP – a high comfort level with basic and complicated accounting is important
  • Continually assess and implement process improvements, including anticipating improvements to become more efficient as the company scales
  • Generate and analyze monthly profitability reports, budget to actuals report and variances, and vendor management analysis by client and by department, and communicate operational status to partners
  • Forecast cash flow positions, related borrowing needs, and available funds for investment (prefunding programs) as well as manage entries for all cash transactions and cash flow related to each loan funding (disbursements, request, etc.)
  • Manage bookkeeping, remittances and overall loan portfolio for each applicable financing partner’s loan servicing program
  • Support external audit requirements providing understanding & sampling support across all entities, as well as any tax compliance and preparation support for filings
  • Contribute to cross-functional groups on various initiatives, reporting and ad hoc matters
  • Demonstrate willingness to dig into the details – keep asking questions until you are comfortable with your decisions
  • Show us that you are willing to speak up – bring up new ideas and recommendations, challenge stale thinking or decisions that could jeopardize loan quality or partner service, and professionally tell colleagues and partners what they need to hear
  • We are a lean, remote team where each individual has a high level of responsibility – ability to work both independently and collaboratively, excellent communication skills, and the ability to roll up your sleeves and jump into a fast-moving, high-growth environment are critical!
  • This list is not comprehensive – there is significant opportunity for growth and expanded responsibility based on your individual skills and capabilities – As long as you as passionate about adding value in an accounting capacity at a fin-tech startup, there will be no shortage of interesting work to be done!

Other Skills / Qualifications We Would Love to See (but are not necessarily required):

  • A four-year college degree: an additional two for an MBA or other advanced degree is even better!
  • Previous start-up experience – or sell us as to “why now?” for a start-up
  • Previous experience in renewable finance or a similar industry, or any experience with lending or complex financial structuring

 Why Work with Sunstone?

  • We work hard but are flexible with when and where you work – we simply want to get things done right and execute quickly
  • We provide medical, dental, and vision coverage as well as a 401K program (in year one!)
  • A great opportunity to start something new and exciting instead of maintaining the same routine every day – we are a high-growth company in a high-growth industry! You can grow and develop with us for years to come
  • Competitive pay and the ability to get an equity stake
  • Hybrid remote/NYC office (2-3 times a week) for a balanced work schedule
