The Director of Credit is a critical role with Sunstone Credit. You will work directly with the Chief Risk Officer to not only underwrite sound loans that the borrower can service, but will also be expected to look for new, creative, and innovative ways to underwrite loans that improves the speed, quality, and competitiveness of our loan adjudication process. The selected candidate will have a stellar track record of underwriting commercial loans with a recognizable institution, elite interviewing skills, excellent organizational skills, a strong knowledge of bank policies and procedures, and a willingness to contribute beyond the scope of the job description to ensure Sunstone’s success.

The following are required skills for the role:

  • Demonstrated success in commercial underwriting, with a track record of productive quality loan growth
  • Demonstrated organizational skills. Show us how you have successfully managed multiple priorities and exceeded deadlines.
  • Strong knowledge of banking regulations – you do not need to be an expert, but you must have a working knowledge of key regulations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills – you will be making the first impression on our customers. Interview Vs. interrogate.
  • Innate sales and negotiation skills – the selected candidate does not let a deal walk away without a fight.
  • Demonstrated willingness to dig into the details – keep asking questions until you are comfortable with your decisions.
  • A student of current events that could impact loan quality; makes recommendations to shield the company from potential risks.
  • Supports the CRO with maintaining an environment at Sunstone laser-focused on compliance, strong ethics, and regulatory adherence.
  • Show us that you are willing to speak up – bring up new ideas and recommendations, challenge stale thinking or decisions that could jeopardize loan quality, and professionally tell colleagues and partners what they need to hear.
  • Five or more years of previous experience in commercial underwriting, including understanding and spreading financial statements.
  • Demonstrated ability to make (really good) decisions independently.
  • This is a start-up. We expect the above skills in the selected candidate, and you will be asked to do more. The selected candidate must be willing to accept “other tasks as assigned” to ensure the company’s success.


Other Skills / Qualifications We Would Love to See (but are not necessarily required):

  • A four-year college degree: an additional two for an MBA or other advanced degree is even better!
  • Located in the Washington D.C. through New York City corridor so we can meet face to face more frequently.
  • Previous start-up experience – or sell us as to “why now?” for a start-up.
