Job Description

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. The SPARC tokamak will be the first net-energy fusion reactor and a key steppingstone towards CFS’ first commercial fusion powerplant. The SPARC tokamak has passed conceptual design and ground has been broken on the reactor site. Moving forward, the device requires engineering complex integrated systems at the limits of materials performance and capabilities and will feature a large-scale cryogenic plant and cryodistribution system to deliver low-temperature gaseous helium to various tokamak subsystems. The cryogenics system is a critical utility for ensuring the tokamak high-temperature superconductors (HTS) meet performance requirements. As the Mechanical Engineer - Cryoplant, you will:Support the Cryoplant Technical Lead in managing the vendor as they design, fabricate, deliver, and commission the plant; identify opportunities, advise on strategy, resolve action items, and enforce contract expectationsCollaborate within a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers to ensure the Cryoplant meets SPARC functional and performance requirements and that Cryoplant capabilities are understood by SPARC stakeholdersManage multiple, changing priorities and efficiently make decisions in a fast-paced startup environment

This team member will:

  • Support the Cryoplant Technical Lead as a point-of-contact for the selected Cryoplant vendor, provide dedicated technical support, including but not limited to: present/clarify specifications, identify and resolve questions to/from vendor, communicate evolving design needs to/from the SPARC team, lead vendor and SPARC team meetings, identify and communicate critical decisions and risks to relevant stakeholders, and document all interactions
  • Maintain Cryoplant specifications and deliverables and solicit feedback to ensure the Cryoplant meets SPARC requirements
  • Perform calculations and develop design deliverables to support design and operation of the Cryoplant for all operating modes and facilitate integration of the Cryoplant with other SPARC systems
  • Prepare the technical portion of Cryoplant design review meetings, including but not limited to: develop deliverables and presentations, review and provide feedback on deliverables and presentation sections, present sections and answer reviewer questions, respond to and resolve review comments
  • Support other SPARC cryogenics team priorities as necessary
  • Provide specific, detailed, and actionable feedback on solicited CRYO materials, e.g. deliverables, proposals, agendas, processes, schedules
  • Support other areas as needed to move the cryogenics project as a whole forward
  • Identify other high-priority areas in the SPARC cryogenics that may benefit from additional support
  • Comply with and uphold CFS design control processes, provide high-quality documentation
  • Prioritize effective teamwork, e.g. maintain a positive mindset, communicate proactively, take initiative, and provide constructive feedback

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering - Mechanical, Chemical, Thermal
  • Engineering of thermofluid systems
  • Working with vendors and technical specifications;
  • Managing technical requirements, PFDs, P&IDs
  • Generating and releasing engineering design documentation and/or operating procedures

Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Hands-on building, installing, and/or operating large-scale cryogenic systems
  • Design, procurement, and operation of cryogenic vessels, piping, and systems
  • Effectively communicating cross-functionally, especially with those not familiar with cryogenics
  • Developing simple, practical, commercially-viable engineering solutions
  • Learning new technology quickly, leveraging available resources, getting things done, and making efficient decisions
  • Running analysis and generating drawings using engineering software
  • Working in a fast-paced, dynamic commercialization environment
  • Experience designing to ASME, PED, CGA, API, and/or other governing design codes
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally
  • Perform activities such as typing, standing, and sitting, for extended periods of time
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate hazards that may include heat, cold, and noise
  • Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
