Job summary:

South Pole is looking for a biometrician to support the company’s carbon project development for Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) project types, with an emphasis on forestry projects. As Senior Coordinator of AFOLU Project Development in North America, you will contribute to the technical aspects of project design to ensure the effective generation and delivery of emission reductions throughout full project cycles in the US and Canada, from origination through verification. 

Reporting directly to the North America Manager of AFOLU Project Development, you will be responsible for inventory design, data interpretation, growth, and yield modeling. Occasional travel to offices and rugged locations may be required. 

The successful candidate will have a unique mix of technical and practical skills, be a fast learner, and have a passion for carbon-driven natural resource management.

Main tasks & responsibilities:

  • Support the Sourcing and Project Development teams by executing growth and yield modeling, database management, and quantification of forest carbon offsets
  • Perform statistical analyses of inventory and other data sets using regression modeling and descriptive statistics
  • Use growth and yield modeling software (Forest Vegetation Simulator) to project changes in timber stocks under a variety of management scenarios for Improved Forest Management and Avoided Conversion projects
  • Assist in the preparation of offset project data reports and verification documentation
  • Conduct feasibility studies to estimate project performance and valuation of forest carbon assets for new and existing clients
  • Assist with forest carbon inventory design
  • Manage and standardize inventory data across the portfolio
  • Create, automate, and document process flows
  • Travel occasionally and when necessary to project sites, team training meetings, and /or conferences.

Requirements:

Essential -

  • University Degree in forestry or forest science, agriculture, natural resource management, environmental studies, and/or geospatial sciences, preferably both bachelor’s and master’s degrees; professional experience in excess of the minimum may be accepted in lieu of a master’s degree
  • Several years experience in forestry, agriculture, natural resource management, climate change mitigation/adaptation, or related fields
  • Experience with growth and yield models, specifically Forest Vegetation Simulator
  • Knowledge of forestry, the soil carbon dynamic, and agricultural land management/grasslands
  • Strong statistical skills
  • Proficient with R or other statistical software
  • Experience with inventory design
  • Capacity to solve complex project-related problems independently, and receive general direction on new assignments or projects
  • Good writing skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate science to a wide audience
  • Advanced user of MS Excel and MS Access for inventory data management
  • Enthusiasm for using environmental markets to address critical climate challenges
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to work remotely
  • Occasional travel within the US and Canada

Desirable -

  • Proficiency with CENTURY/DAYCENT, DNDC, or EPIC/APEX is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of forest carbon policy and carbon standards like ACR, CAR, VERRA, CDM, GS4GG, etc
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS, QGIS, or a similar geospatial information system is a strong plus
  • Proficiency in data queries and analysis (e.g., SQL), and experience automating GIS processes using scripting (e.g., Python)
  • Certified Forester credential including state licensure and/or SAF Certified Forester or Association of Consulting Foresters membership preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish and/or French
