Job Description

The RoleWe are looking for a Business Development Manager to develop a robust pipeline of project opportunities by building relationships with clients and channel partners. In addition to managing your day-to-day schedule, meeting with clients, and analyzing opportunities, you’ll work closely with the Director, Business Development - East to structure a platform for future growth on the East Coast of the US. You’ll be a key stakeholder as we grow our presence on the East Coast. The role is based in the Northeast (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey region). 

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Develop a robust pipeline of microgrid opportunities in line with SMS’ overarching Northeast go-to-market strategy
  • Strengthen relationships with channel partners through consistent engagement
  • Bring thoughtful, innovative ideas to strategic discussions
  • Perform initial analysis of microgrid opportunities to determine baseline feasibility, work with the Project Development team and Director, Business Development to further scope and refine project opportunities
  • Work with clients through the entire project development cycle to ensure the project flows continuously through the pipeline from lead generation to close and through commissioning to operations
  • Work collaboratively across disciplines within SMS to improve processes and drive overall business efficiency

The Ideal Candidate

  • 3-5+ years of sales or business development experience in the energy industry with a proven track record of negotiating and closing large, complex opportunities
  • Experience working in the energy sector in a customer-facing role and have a sophisticated understanding of the market programs available to our customer base
  • Expert knowledge in one or more of the following: retail and wholesale energy markets, local and federal energy policy landscapes, and energy generation technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, and sometimes ambiguous environment
  • Self-motivated, requiring minimal oversight to excel
  • Familiar with CRMs (Salesforce, HubSpot, or similar)
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, environmental science, engineering, or another related field to benefit a sales role
  • Based in the Northeast + willingness to regularly travel within the region (25%+ of the time)
