Job Description

WattCarbon is hiring a Data Engineer to build out the data ingestion and modeling pipeline for our energy decarbonization platform.

About WattCarbon

WattCarbon is a platform for procuring 24/7 carbon-free energy. Buyers are companies and other organizations with net zero commitments that want the ability to source carbon free energy on a time and locational basis. Sellers are companies capable of delivering carbon-free energy, including by deploying new clean energy resources, dispatching demand response, and developing electrification projects. WattCarbon is committed to accelerating the transition to a clean energy future and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. We use sophisticated energy modeling tools to estimate the carbon emissions of all types of buildings and energy assets and connect to live data feeds to enable precise, granular reporting. Our vision is to become the foundational platform for turning distributed energy resources into decarbonization assets.

The Company You Will Join

We are a seed stage startup backed by some of the most respected climate investors on the planet (True Ventures, Jetstream, Village Global, Looking Glass, Keiki Capital, Greensoil PropTech Ventures, and others); you would be the fourth engineer and seventh team member. We are open to any applicant who lives in the US - you should be comfortable working in a fully distributed, remote-first company. Our team lives in several different cities (and one RV). We prioritize personal growth and professional satisfaction and encourage applications from individuals who want to have an outsized impact on a consequential problem.

What We Want from You

As an early hire, this is an opportunity to be creative and have a big impact on the design of our Python-based data pipeline/ETL stack.

  • You should be able to build scalable data integrations and ETL pipelines - we will be ingesting data from dozens of suppliers and electricity meter data from hundreds of thousands of meters.
  • You will be tasked with ingesting diverse datasets (such as weather data and modeled buildings dataset data) for the purposes of downstream modeling.
  • You write readable code that makes it easy for other engineers to integrate into broader systems.

We are also looking for some other skills.

  • Experience with formative data pipeline construction is a plus, as this hire will design, develop, and create processes in addition to writing the code. You should know how to keep it only as complicated as necessary.
  • General data science/modeling experience (or even interest) would be a plus, as this work will be used for modeling and prediction for the electricity and carbon impacts of buildings, heat pumps, photovoltaics and wind farms.
  • While contextual knowledge isn’t required, any experience with energy data, energy data forecasting, energy data modeling, and energy efficiency savings modeling would be a plus.

It is important to us that you work well within our team and evidence that you have helped others grow will be weighed heavily in our screening process.

Company Culture

You will contribute to core engineering decisions and refine the processes and culture of the engineering team. We expect you to embrace a company culture in which:

  • We learn as we go and we are okay with deleting as much code as we’re writing.
  • We focus on being kind to each other rather than being right.
  • We operate with trust and communicate with vulnerability.
  • We are not afraid to admit when we don’t know something.
  • We share our successes and mistakes as a team, while also celebrating individual contributions.
  • We want our software to not just work, but to be a source of pride, so we value the learning found in doing the work itself over the completion of the task.
  • We actively address under-representation in tech through benefits and paid leave policies that are compatible with a diversity of personal and family situations, including a 32-hour work week and flexible work hours.

We have committed to a salary for this role of $140,000 plus company equity, irrespective of location or other factors.

To apply, please submit a resume (or a link to your linkedin) and cover letter to recruiting@wattcarbon.com. We’re a small company, so we really value what you have to say. Tell us about yourself and how you see your career progressing, and answer at least one of the following questions: What kinds of problems interest you? What makes you a good fit for an early-stage company? How do you go about growing your tech skills?
