We design our commercial strategies, operational approaches, and product suites so as to best leverage data-driven insights, automated workflows, ML-infused pipelines, and fully automated decision engines. These capabilities are enabled by our progressively modern software stack and engineering best practices, which in turn provide the scalable platform we need to put a serious dent in carbon emissions. We’re looking for collaborative, talented, passionate and resourceful folks to join our team and help us lay the foundation for our important mission and ambitious plan.

What you will do

We are looking for a Head of Engineering to lead our software engineering function and serve on the senior leadership team that guides our company's vision, strategy, and execution. This experienced leader will lead a team of top tier engineering talent across engineering management, technical leadership, and individual contributors. An interested candidate would not need to serve as our technical expert...we've got that covered. We have strong energy domain knowledge and competency deeply embedded across the company. An interested candidate would not need to be an energy expert...we've got that covered, too. We have top tier engineering management in place on all our engineering teams, including ML Engineering, Data Platform/Engineering, Energy Science Engineering, Backend, DevOps/Infra, and Architecture. An interested candidate would need to nurture this team, and bring on new managers and teams as we grow, but a rebuild isn't necessary...we've got an incredibly strong team in place. This person would have the opportunity (and expectation) to engage on company strategy alongside a high-trust and collaborative senior leadership team. A candidate with company-wide ideas is welcomed! This is an engineering leadership role, and this person will be expected to build deeply trustful and constructive relationships with partner leaders in Science, Engineering, Business, and Operations.

Our software engineering team works across cloud infrastructure and distributed systems, data engineering, ML engineering and MLOps, simulation ecosystems, complex workflow orchestration, science-centric application development, and security. Our engineers supercharge design and delivery of our product development activities while helping to build and lead an engineering capability that is the core of the company’s strategy and identity. In the near-term, you will join the ranks of a team already working at high proficiency. You will be able to focus on learning our business while supporting our colleagues as you get up to speed. Soon, you will plan for the exponential growth ahead funded by our anticipated Series B fundraising round, ensuring that our cultural, process, talent, and technical foundations are in place for such growth. You will lead us as we grow from 40 engineers to ~100 in the next 18 months.

In the medium-term, you will cultivate our software engineering function by nurturing a trust-based and collaborative culture, embracing cross-functional design and delivery, supporting intrinsically-linked product suites, and enabling ever-scaling scope and ambition. You will oversee the design, development, delivery, and maintenance of our engineering function while serving as a servant leader to our talented and growing cadre of engineers. You will lead us as we grow to 600+ engineers in the coming few years.

What we are looking for

• You have run a 200+ software engineering organization (and have the experiences / lessons learned / best practices to apply to Equilibrium)
• You have been a senior engineering leader in an exponentially growing startup (and have experiences / lessons learned / best practices to apply to Equilibrium)
• "Engineering organization building" is your superpower (as opposed to, say, a technologist, or a star engineering manager). You need to be baseline competent at technology (and great if you are much better than baseline!) and excellent at managing your people, but your superpower needs to be shaping and building a 100-800+ person engineering organization.
• You must have excitement and the skillset to support structuring and enabling a hybrid workforce (i.e., some personnel based in SF/Boston/Seattle/London/NYC, some remote)
• Your leadership style is compassion-centric
• You demonstrate the "activation energy" necessary to galvanize and lead a team of top tier engineers
• You are a trust-based collaborator with senior executive peers
• Yo are passionate about and committed to fighting climate change

Nice to have additional skills

• Background in energy, power, energy retail, trading, financial services, and/or autonomous vehicles
• Exposure to and interest in autonomous workflows
• Exposure to and interest in ML/AI pipelines and associated data structures.
• Exposure to Go and Python
• Exposure to and interest in a range of data engineering tools (ELT, streaming, pub-sub, relational DBs, object DBs, GraphDBs, etc.).
• Comfort across a number of our technical domains: cloud infrastructure, data platform and engineering, MLOps and ML pipelines, simulation ecosystems, workflow orchestration, and application development.
