Job title: Principal Engineer (Tech Lead) - Billing & Payments

Location: London, UK or Lisbon, Portugal (including hybrid)

Part time available?: Yes

Salary: £93,895 - £137,000

Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working? 

You'll be joining the Kaluza Technology community. We’re a large team of both data-led and product focused Software and Production Engineers, pushing the boundaries of technology and working at an extraordinary scale. As a collective we strive for engineering greatness and by ensuring best practices across the board of the community.

You’ll be working on the Kaluza’s Energy Retail platform. This is a SaaS technology platform that aims to revolutionise the operating platforms for energy retailers globally. This platform has been built with scale and technical quality in mind and is the foundation for decarbonisation efforts by Kaluza’s customers. We’re looking to transform to a multi-tenant, international ready model to help the business take on new challenges and external customers.

What will I be doing?

You'd be joining as a key tech leader in the area of Billing and Payments working for the Head of Engineering within the technical leadership team for the area. Working alongside SEM’s, Product, Data and Design, you would help shape the direction of the area and drive the long term technical strategy for the area. You would be responsible for identifying and solving our biggest most complex and ambiguous problems whilst also contributing to the wider company tech direction.

You would have a remit to move around to work on the most valuable problems to be solved. Sometimes that will be going deep into a particular team for a period of time, sometimes going wide and guiding multiple teams bringing together a solution. 

You would also raise the bar on our operational excellence and ways of working, and help lead the tech community for the area.

You would work with Software Engineering Managers and the Head of Engineering to help build and enhance a great engineering culture and help grow people without having direct line management responsibilities. The ability to influence without authority will be key.

In the Billing and Payments space we have several interesting challenges that you would help solve including:

  • How to abstract and reduce complexity across multiple clients and countries
  • Scale systems to process millions of data points through complex processes
  • Build extensible systems that allow for customizability

We are only part way through this journey and there are lots of  challenges still to be solved!

Ideally you’ll have/be

  • Self-driven, able to define your own backlog and priorities through collaboration across the company and within your area
  • A pragmatic product focused engineer who loves to solve problems
  • Great at influencing and bringing people together and along on a journey and getting the best decision from a group of excellent engineers with differing viewpoints
  • Be comfortable working across multiple teams as well as sometimes going deep
  • Data driven in decision making but can apply high judgment when data is unclear
  • Is actively transparent, objective and has the trust and respect of their engineering community
  • Experience of multiple programming languages / styles and approaches to solve problems
  • Experience of designing scalable and resilient distributed systems
  • Can help teams select the best tools / tech stack for the problems by asking the right questions
  • Is a great mentor and coach to help grow others careers
  • Has proven abilities to build and nurture highly  collaborative and open working environments
