Job Description

Rubi is ushering in an entirely new planet-positive era for manufacturing. Our vision is a world where human prosperity is planet-positive, and manufacturing is symbiotic with Earth. Our mission is to build the world’s most sustainable supply chains for the important materials we rely on; including textiles, building materials, food, packaging, and more.

Rubi decarbonizes supply chains, starting with the fashion industry.  Inspired by how trees breathe in CO2, Rubi uses biochemical processes powered by enzymes at an industrial scale to “eat'' carbon emissions and make carbon-negative, resource-neutral textiles for the fashion industry.   Within the last year alone, Rubi’s game-changing technology has captured the interest of the scientific community, top investors, and the world’s most influential  fashion brands.  It has partnerships with global fashion brands and manufacturers, and has been featured in Vogue Business and TechCrunch.

As Rubi Laboratories is growing, we are building our amazing team to cover all the scientific realms needed by our technology and currently we are looking to bring on an Engineering Technician focused on building, operating and troubleshooting our in lab reactor systems. This is a tremendous opportunity for someone who enjoys working with complex electrical systems, building unique equipment from design specs, and leveraging automation technologies. Most importantly, your work will play a key impact for our product and how widely accessible this carbon-negative material is available to exciting, and well-known brands.  You thrive in a fast-paced start-up environment, and are passionate about dedicating your craft to the betterment of the world.

In this role you will:

  • Design, execute, and analyze experiments conducted in immobilized enzyme reactors or packed bed reactors.
  • Contribute to the process development including media development, process optimization, and scale-down/scale-up studies
  • Use engineering principles (mass and energy balances, thermodynamics) and computational modeling (CAD, ANSYS, etc.) to ensure immobilized enzymes/biocatalysts works across scales; systematically scale up the in-vitro process
  • Build and model a 3D reactor/plant with flow/fluid dynamics.
  • Effectively communicate experimental results and implications across all levels of the R&D team
  • Develop reactor process scripts to test and optimize in controlled environments
  • Modify and improve reactor hardware for increased functionality along with operating and maintaining bioprocess equipment (bio-analyzers, centrifuges, bioreactors, autoclaves, etc.)
  • Author tech transfer documents, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Batch Production Records (BPRs), and other quality/R&D documentation as needed

Qualified candidates have:

  • Bachelors or advanced degree in chemical engineering, biochemical engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5+ years industry experience working in process development.
  • Prior experience from bench scale (up to 1L) to pilot scale (up to 20L).
  • Understanding of the use of enzymes in an industrial context.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply conservation of mass and energy principles in data analysis and process modeling.

Nice to have (but not required):

  • Experience with commercial scale manufacturing.
  • Experience working with immobilized enzyme reactors or packed bed reactors.
  • Scale-up to and operation of bioreactors/fermenters larger than pilot scale (e.g. pressure vessels).
  • Experience with multi-step immobilized enzyme cascades.
  • Use of software packages such as plant simulation CAD, techno economic analysis, and life cycle assessment, JMP, R, or Python.
