Job Description

The Company

Ecolectro is a climate-science company using today’s talent and technology to tackle our biggest climate problem. We’re bringing scalable, low-cost, clean green hydrogen energy to the very near future. We have startup mindset and progressive culture, grounded in hard science. It’s an exciting time for our company - we’re small and scrappy, but have strong intellectual-property, world-class facilities, and a well-rounded group of believers investing in our success. Join us in unleashing the green hydrogen revolution!

We're on a continuous improvement journey to foster diversity & inclusion through intentional practices and processes. We welcome non-traditional candidates, people of all backgrounds, experiences, abilities and perspectives. Also, all gens are welcome!

The Role & Team

As Senior Electrochemist, reporting directly to our CTO, you’ll lead the R&D Electrochemisty Team. You will drive innovation, champion R&D lines of effort, and be an active participant (not a bystander) in the full process - from ideation, to end product, to customer feedback. You’ll work on problems that matter, connect to a larger purpose, and see your ideas come to life!

Our team of scientists, engineers and problem-solvers contribute to a fundamental shift in how the world addresses climate change. We’re serious about the science, but as humans & coworkers - we’re authentic, lighthearted, and kind.

It’s difficult to do science from home. Thus, at this time we work on site at our dog-friendly headquarters in Ithaca, NY - a burgeoning climate-tech hub in the beautiful finger lakes region!

What You’ll Do Here

  • Champion & shepherd your work in support of development of polymer electrolytes in electrochemical devices, from ideation to the end-product in customer hands
  • Lead the work of the team of materials chemists, analytical chemists, and research engineers, providing guidance, inspiration and support for growth
  • Drive the fabrication and testing of electrochemical cells to quantitatively measure performance to meet product requirements and OKRs
  • Prioritize, plan and execute detailed phases of project work, documents results, assess risks, conduct gap analysis, respond to issues, report conclusions and provide recommendations to inform strategic decision making
  • Problem solve to overcome technical challenges and communicate and make complex design trade-offs
  • Drive device innovation through hands-on engagement in the day-to-day lab work
  • Collaborate with the broader R&D team to advance momentum toward milestones and goals
  • Contribute to new product ideas or new processes to advance the field, and development of intellectual property
  • Reviews and present relevant industry news, participate in writing proposals

What You’ll Bring To The Table

Don't think you meet 100% the attributes for this role (below)? Don't self-reject, apply anyhow!

  • PhD in chemical engineering, chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, or related field
  • 5-10+ years technical experience (experimental & applied) in electrochemistry
  • Experience optimizing electrochemical cell structure-property relationships, conducting cell characterization, designing devices, analyzing components, and building or modifying instrumentation
  • Knowledge of electrochemical systems, electrode fabrication, material science, and material synthesis processes
  • Experience leading, coaching and developing a team
  • Passion, conviction, and energy needed to drive innovation; balanced with humility, empathy and awareness of team dynamics necessary to work well in a team
  • Startup mindset — ability to easily switch from strategic to tactical, adapt to change, wear several hats, work independently, come curious with initiative and focus on company milestones

Bonus Points if you also have:

  • Domain experience in hydrogen fuel cells and/or hydrogen generation from water electrolysis
  • Knowledge of design principles and integration requirements of components in electrochemical systems
  • Experience with fuel cell and membrane-based electrolysis systems (Electrode fabrication, GDLs, CCMs, GDEs, Catalyst/Ionomer Inks, flow fields)
  • Experience in scaling up electrochemical devices and electrodeposition

What We Offer You

  • Base pay of 110-140K. Our pay bands are based on compensation research relative to role, level, and data for companies of similar size and stage. We audited this data twice yearly and adjust for market changes.
  • Health, Dental, Vision, and Disability insurances
  • 401K with a 3% company match, and 50% company-match for next 2%
  • Time To Recharge. 15 days PTO, 14 standard paid holidays, plus 1 week (paid) all-company winter break
  • Annual professional development allowance
  • A modern approach to performance feedback, rooted in psychological safety (ask us about this!)

More About The Science

Ecolectro is bringing green hydrogen to the marketplace through electrolyzers that integrate patented polymers into high performance (ionic conductivity & current density) and durable stacks. Our scientists and engineers design & build units with our exceptional membranes and electrodes, delivering high production rates and efficiency of pure hydrogen without the need for platinum, iridium and titanium. We continue to push the limits of electrolysis technology with an emphasis on research and willingness to challenge assumptions.

Accommodations

Also, we (of course) follow federal and state disability laws and are happy to better enable those with disabilities or differences (aka accommodations), during the application phase, interview process, and employment. Please email careers@ecolectro.com to chat with us on how we can best enable you in our process.

EEOC and E-verify Participation

We are legally required to conduct EEOC reporting. While we are happy to support the intent of this federal requirement, we recognize that the standard questions not capture all gender identities and ethnicities, and include outdated terms we don’t use internally. We want you to know that we celebrate all identities. For this reason, you will see the standard EEO-1 questions in our hiring system, followed by OUR questions, when you apply.  Ecolectro participates in E-verify - click here to learn more.

Our Hiring Process

In the spirit of a continuous learning journey, please share where we can do better in our process! We want to know!
