About the team

To achieve our goals the Software Engineering team is building state-of-the-art solutions for our engineering and product teams spanning over the complete data product lifecycle starting with our order management over software engineering for our ground segment towards higher level data product pipelines and delivery.

Location - Our Data and Software Engineering teams are based across Belgium and Germany. For this role you will need to be based in Germany with occasional travel to our Freiburg office.

The Role (s)

We have multiple Backend Software Engineer roles that will play a key role in the software and infrastructure engineering behind satellite operations, processing, and delivery of our data products as well as user facing interfaces. You will be working with modern technologies, which currently include Python, S3, Docker, Terraform, Zarr, Cloud-Optimized GeoTIFF, STAC, PostGIS, and more. We are also open to adopting suitable alternatives that your expertise brings. 

As our Backend Software Engineer, you will be:

• Working closely with our engineering teams and stakeholders e.g., from product, infrastructure, and image processing ensuring their requirements are being met. 

• Collaboratively building the services for internal stakeholders from Image processing, Mission operations or product teams. 

• Improving the delivery and quality of our codebase by creating and improving best practices, as well as our development environment, including but not limited to our CI/CD platform. 

• Keeping up to date with and evaluating new technologies, frameworks, and standards. 

• Building scalable, maintainable, and secure services expected to operate continually for years. 

• Mentor junior engineers to help them reach their potential.

About you

• A motivated, curious, and inquisitive team player, who has a passion for delivering the best solutions. 

• Strong programming background. 

• Experience working with at least one commercial cloud provider (AWS, GCP, Azure, …) 

• Demonstrable experience with SQL databases (ideally Postgres). PostGIS would be a bonus! 

• Experience in an agile work environment, embracing work and learning in iterations. 

• A strategic mindset concerning design and implementation of features as well as avoidance/removal of technical debt. 

• Experience working in the Earth Observation sector and/or New Space startups is highly advantageous, however not essential.
