Job Description

Battolyser Systems is looking to recruit an Engineering Manager

Welcome to Battolyser Systems, a fast-growing cleantech scale-up company based in The Netherlands. We develop and manufacture products that can store electricity and produce hydrogen from renewable power to balance societal demand in a truly revolutionary way. Let us take you on this journey and show how you can make a difference by joining a fast-growing purpose driven company.

First, some background information on Battolyser Systems. Eight years ago, some really smart people at the Delft University of Technology invented the world’s first integrated battery- and electrolyser system. They named it a ‘Battolyser’ and realized this invention could connect renewable power generation in a revolutionary way with how society will consume energy in a net zero emission world. To make real impact, the technology was spun-out of the Delft University of Technology into a company in 2019 to demonstrate a proof of concept in an industrial setting. And so, Battolyser Systems was born.

Fast forward to today. We have a patented and proven technology; we are commercializing our products and made our first sales. We are starting up our first factory and are planning the fully automated mass manufacturing version to be ready in 2024. Present day we have attracted 50 people and anticipate doubling this next year. Our people are amongst the top talents in the renewable energy and hydrogen market, passionate and motivated to make a difference. Knowledgeable, connected and committed are some of the keywords that best describe current leadership. In growing the company, we are looking to recruit an Engineering Manager to help deliver Always Clean Energy to the world.

About the role:

As Engineering Manager, you are responsible for the design and engineering of our Balance of System to ensure it will enable the safe and efficient operation of our current and future Battolyser stacks. You will be managing a multidisciplinary engineering team and will report to the Head of Projects and Engineering. This is a super exciting and pivotal role at the technical heart of our company.

More specifically you will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Manage and further grow the engineering team (currently 6 FTE) in line with our plans to double the organization in the next 12 months.
  • Deliver and take ownership of the integrated and multidisciplinary engineering scope (including safety design) of the Balance of Systems and its interfaces with the Battolyser stacks as well as the customer specific interfaces.
  • Provide engineering support to business development, commercial offers and collaboration with EPC contractors to deliver Battolyser plants for customers.
  • Support the long-term concept and development work of the integrated Balance of Systems Basic Engineering Design and its components to achieve our functional and costs targets.
  • Deliver the commissioning and start-up support for our Battolyser products at our customer sites.
  • Support the engineering as well as the commissioning and start-up of our inhouse testing facilities.
  • Further develop and strengthen our engineering capabilities, processes and systems to become a world-class engineering outfit.

We value autonomy and you will have lots of freedom, with that we expect you to take initiative and ownership of your role. You will work with an international team of fun and bright colleagues with professional backgrounds in various top companies and institutes, check us out at www.linkedin.com/company/battolysersystems/people.

Who are you:

At Battolyser Systems we have a shared mission: we will enable ‘Always Clean Energy’ for the world. We don’t just talk about the energy transition, we want to fix it and we expect you to feel the same way.

We believe that, in order to be successful in this role, you need at least 15 years of experience in engineering management in the hydrogen- or (petro-)chemical industry and have been leading multidisciplinary teams. In these roles you have learned to empower people and deliver through others. You are fully up to speed with the relevant engineering- and (process) safety practices and are able to scale these practices in a growing organisation. In this role delivery is key, however you know when to put your foot down when it comes to safety and asset integrity. You strive in an environment of growth that comes with continuous change and ambiguity and can balance short term priorities with longer term goals. Lastly, you appreciate that this growth brings great personal development opportunities but also requires great teamwork and dedication to peak workloads at times.
