Job Description

META is seeking a Mitacs postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto to work in Dr. Amr S. Helmy Nanophotonics Group and to implement nanofabrication and microfabrication research and development for advanced nanophotonic devices for a variety of applications such as light emitting diodes and augmented and virtual reality displays.

What You'll Do:

The position is heavily hands-on and requires the ability to attentively follow cleanroom protocols and in-house standard operating procedures. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to develop novel industry-adaptable fabrication procedures using advanced lithography techniques, including electron beam lithography and nanoimprinting. The position involves detailed execution of successive nano-fabrication processes ranging from wet-chemistry to etching, deposition, and high-resolution lithography. The accepted candidate is expected to be proactive in developing novel fabrication processes, collaborating with industry partners, and presenting results in conferences. The incumbent must also be able to demonstrate full language proficiency at preparing manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed scientific journals and research proposals to granting agencies.

Some of the typical responsibilities will include:

• Learning and developing micro and nano-fabrication processes while operating in a Class 100 cleanroom environment.
• Conduct experiments to improve, discover, and test nano/microfabrication processes. Resolve technical process issues with innovation and pragmatism, while mitigating delay and process waste.
• Work with the photonic design team to create high-resolution lithography patterns) electron-beam lithography) and conduct pattern engineering to maximize the lithography throughput.
• Execute end to end nanofabrication of photonic components using lithography, etching, deposition, and imprinting techniques.
• Characterizing nanostructures and materials in and out of a cleanroom using metrology equipment (SEM, AFM, FIB-SEM, Ellipsometry). Collecting and measuring data and developing characterization models.
• Maintaining and writing rigorous and complete documentation such as standard operating procedures (SOPs). Delivering biweekly or monthly reports on the development progress and the measured data.
• Extend their knowledge in photonics and nanofabrication physics and apply it to rapidly evolving photonic devices with application in disruptive technologies.
• Effectively contribute to early-stage prototyping and intellectual property development.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A PhD degree in electrical engineering, applied physics, or semiconductor optics research.
• Proven ability and hands-on experience with UV and electron beam lithography systems, layout engineering, and plasma etching, and thin film deposition techniques from design to implementation.
• In-depth familiarity with thin film deposition, spin coating, wet bench processing, and metrology characterization is required.
• In depth knowledge in one of these areas is required: metamaterials and plasmonics, flat optics, silicon photonics.
• Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals is a must.
