Job Description

About the Role 

We are seeking a Senior Optical Engineer for our facility in Pleasanton, California. You will play a key role in Research and Development of forefront and next generation of advanced material and metamaterial technologies and applications. Your role will be to support design and development of novel nanostructured coatings with advanced optical, electrical and thermal functionalities for multiple projects including the development of ultra-lightweight high-reflectivity and low absorptivity nano-structured materials for next generation optical sensing devices and nanostructured optical films incorporating advanced metasurface and thermal coatings for solar, LED and display applications. At META we have in-house design optimization capability. For each application we need a tailored nanostructure design, in addition we need to incorporate the non-ideal experimental discrepancy into the equation. Your role will be to support the design optimization effort through analytical models, in-house and proprietary full-field simulation software to provide target specifications.

Some of the typical responsibilities will include: 

  • Provide novel metamaterial design solutions for the development of RF beam shaping reflectors for enhancing 5G communication systems, transparent antenna and wireless sensing technologies. 
  • Design and develop novel nanostructured coatings with advanced optical, electrical and thermal functionalities for multiple programs including next generation optical sensing, imaging and display systems and solar cells. 
  • Support META’s in-house design software capability expansion using novel numerical approaches and high performance computing systems
  • Apply advanced principles, theories, and concepts to improve technical applications and analysis.  
  • Provide guidance and training to the technical team on effectively utilizing computational tools 
  • Prepare and deliver scientific papers regarding new technologies, share and promote new ideas and capabilities and conferences and trade shows.  
  • Proposal development and execution of customer projects. 
  • Supervise and provide technical support for other engineers and interns. 

  

Minimum qualifications: 

  • PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering or relevant Applied Sciences 
  • 5 years of experience in the design and optimization of nanostructured optical systems using analytical models and computational simulation tools 
  • Experience with an innovative, fast paced environment proving products meet industry standards.  
  • Fast technical and/or scientific document generation/modification.  


Preferred qualifications and experience: 

  • Semiconductor device physics and modelling.  
  • Experience with thermal modeling 
  • Experience with IP portfolio development and management 
  • Experience in advanced lithography tools and processes (e-beam, nanoimprint, phase mask lithography etc.).  
  • Optical and Electrical Characterization of thin film material systems.
