Job Description

META is seeking a Technical Specialist in roll-to-roll micro and nano replication to join our process development group based out of our manufacturing facility in Thurso, Quebec. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Process Development, the Technical Specialist will be responsible for replication of micro and nanostructure-based devices at an industrial scale, utilizing our existing roll-to-roll UV casting / imprinting systems to ensure product specification is being met. The Technical Specialist will work as part of a multi-functional team and play a key role in the scale-up development of micro and nano-optic features for the banknote and brand protection markets, as well as other applications that may include printed electronics and augmented related optical components.

What You’ll Do: 

Meta Materials will depend on your work to deliver high quality products that meet stringent nano-scale fidelity requirements. The successful candidate will develop new casting and embossing techniques to improve micro and nano-structure feature fidelity, through-put and make recommendations for quality control. 

This work is heavily hands-on and includes qualifying new and existing UV curable resins to meet desired performance specifications; performing experiments to qualify and quantify current and future UV casting line capabilities; qualifying and purchasing new equipment based on performance results; and technical reporting on project advancement as required. This is a specialized role where the successful applicant will spend most of their time in a high-tech industrial setting with direct support from technicians and technologists.   


Some of the typical responsibilities will include: 

  • Learning and executing micro- and nano-scale imprinting processes in a roll-to-roll setup. 
  • Roll-to-roll process development of micro and nanostructures using advanced techniques with automated machinery.   
  • Collecting and measuring data and executing nano-characterization processes. Performing optical microscope and profilometry measurements on nano-imprinted substrates  
  • Facilitate failure mode analysis and implement corrective actions to expedite the scale-up phase of product development. 
  • Guide quality control protocols for UV casting materials and techniques. 

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • M.Sc. or equivalent in physics, chemistry, or materials engineering. Significant industry experience may be considered in lieu of academic credentials.  
  • 3+ years of experience in nanoimprint lithography or a similar role using UV curable resins, thermoplastics, or polymers. 
  • Hands-on experience with micro- and nano-replication roll-to-plate, or roll-to-roll nanoimprinting lithography techniques with ultraviolet or thermal polymer resin on flexible substrates. 
  • Demonstrated skill with UV-NIL of micro- and/or nanostructures, together with adhesion and release properties at both lab and pilot scales. 
  • Familiarity with flexible substrate, UV resin, and/or thermoplastic characterization techniques  

Assets: 

  • Experience working in a manufacturing setting.  
  • Strong understanding of polymer substrates and UV resin rheology  
  • Understanding of printing and coating techniques including flexographic, gravure, offset or similar.  
  • Able to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings
