Job Description

We are living in an incredible moment in human history, a time where we have a diverse array of impactful climate solutions, but we don’t have enough people trained and motivated to put those solutions into homes and communities around the world. That’s where you come in. We are currently seeking a Controller to join our Business Division and lead the accounting team to help us realize our mission of building leaders who drive sustainability solutions. SEI is a 25 year old nonprofit organization, whose business has unusually complex accounting and reporting needs as a 501c3 with diverse funding streams, and multiple types of fee-for-service engagements.  The ideal candidate will be excited to mature the department’s systems, processes and procedures as we scale. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, and comfortable working in fast-paced complex environments. Work is conducted on a hybrid schedule,  in your home office or an offsite location 3 days per week and our San Rafael office 2 days per week.

 

CONTROLLER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and manage a small accounting staff, creating a productive trusting environment and supporting the professional growth of the team members.
  • Oversee all aspects of the accounting function including the month-end close, preparation of monthly financial reporting, AP / AR management, compliance, budgeting, payroll accounting etc.
  • Accountable for regulatory compliance, including the timely and accurate completion of both our annual general audit, and funder-specific audits 
  • Collaborate with geographically dispersed leaders across the organization on program/project budgets and reporting needs, and effective resource planning
  • Own the ongoing development of accounting policies, processes, and controls
  • Ensure the financial systems and tools in use are effective, efficient and compliant
  • Responsible for timely renewals of business registrations and filings

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA Degree in accounting or equivalent 
  • 10+ years of accounting and finance experience in organizations with $5M+ in revenue
  • Experience leading accounting function in nonprofits required. Experience in services, and/or consulting sectors preferred. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication, analytical thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Experience with and interest in various technologies as well as competency across the Google and Microsoft suites of software. Aptitude and willingness to quickly learn industry or project-specific software.
  • Ability to work under direct supervision, collaboratively in teams/partners, or independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to empathize with others. 
  • Experience and aptitude for rapport building & working collaboratively with colleagues, partners, & clients.
  • Genuine commitment to anti-racism and willingness to work in racial equity frameworks and experience in addressing racism and racial equity with team members and programmatically.

 

WHAT WE OFFER

  • A starting salary of $110,000 annually
  • 403(b) Retirement Plan, with employer match after one year
