Position Summary: The Manager or Senior Manager, Innovation will play a key role in C2ES's expanding work on technological innovation and will act as the staff lead in convening working groups composed of companies and other national thought leaders on a set of four critical path technologies. Reporting to the Director for U.S. Policy and Outreach, the Manager/Sr. Manager will work in a matrixed capacity with both the Policy and Outreach and Business Engagement teams to design and implement a plan to identify and advocate for policy priorities to accelerate the commercial readiness of technologies critical to full, economy-wide decarbonization. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic, world-class team, leading companies, and emerging technology developers to advance technological solutions for climate change. Candidates will be evaluated for the Manager vs. Senior Manager positions based on qualifications and experience.
Manager:
- Working largely independently, with strategic guidance and direction, act as the staff lead in the programmatic development and convening of working groups focused on critical-path technologies, including: direct air capture, hydrogen, long-duration energy storage, and sustainable aviation fuels;
- Work with experts from across the organization, companies and other partners to develop recommendations to accelerate the deployment of critical-path clean energy technologies as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and generating economic and other community benefits;
- Support advocacy related efforts to advance those recommendations as needed;
- Cultivate and expand a network of relevant experts and researchers in academia, research institutions, and other NGOs working on innovation and technology policy;
- Grow expertise on innovation- and technology-related policy topics;
- Under direction, conduct research and analysis on policies supporting the full lifecycle of technology innovation and deployment (e.g., federal funding for research, development, and demonstration; tax credits; purchase subsidies; trade-related policies, etc.);
- Author policy briefs, blog posts, and other publications;
- Contribute a technology policy perspective and relevant expertise to other C2ES research and analysis, including climate and clean energy policy, including regional economic opportunities, climate and trade, and others;
- Support C2ES's external visibility and thought leadership on technology policy, including by representing C2ES at external workshops, conferences, and other forums;
- Support C2ES's engagement in the federal appropriations process, including engagement with congressional offices and submission of appropriations requests;
- As appropriate, represent C2ES in conferences, meetings, and other forums, and in interactions with stakeholders from government, business, and civil society
- Contribute as needed to the work of C2ES's policy and outreach team, led by the VP for policy and outreach
- Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council (JEDI-C) expectations – All staff are expected to participate in monthly JEDI-C All staff meetings. During these meetings staff can interact and learn about different topics provided by the JEDI-C.
- Demonstrate commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
- Complete company trainings assigned during on boarding and on a yearly basis. Some specialize training will be required as well for Management positions.
Sr. Manager:
- Working independently in line, with program strategy and limited guidance and direction, act as the staff lead in the programmatic development and convening of working groups focused on critical-path technologies, including direct air capture, hydrogen, long-duration energy storage, and sustainable aviation fuels;
- Work with experts from across the organization, companies and other partners, leading the development of recommendations to accelerate the deployment of critical-path clean energy technologies as a means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and generating economic and other community benefits;
- Identify potential opportunities to enact those recommendations and working with advocacy team to advance them;
- Leverage an existing network of relevant experts and researchers in academia, research institutions, and other NGOs working on innovation and technology policy;
- May assume responsibility for specific program deliverables as assigned.
- Serve as staff expert on innovation- and technology-related policy topics;
- Lead research and analysis on policies supporting the full lifecycle of technology innovation and deployment (e.g., federal funding for research, development, and demonstration; tax credits; purchase subsidies; trade-related policies, etc.);
- Author policy briefs, blog posts, and other publications;
- Assist in the development of a technology policy perspective and relevant expertise to other C2ES research and analysis, including climate and clean energy policy, including regional economic opportunities, climate and trade, and others;
- Raise C2ES's external visibility and thought leadership on technology policy, including by representing C2ES at external workshops, conferences, and other forums;
- Lead C2ES's substantive engagement in the federal appropriations process, including development and refinement of appropriations priorities;
- Working closely with advocacy team, engage with congressional offices and submit appropriations requests;
- Represent C2ES in conferences, meetings, and other forums, and in interactions with stakeholders from government, business, and civil society.
- Contribute as needed to the work of C2ES's policy and outreach team, led by the VP for policy and outreach;

Qualifications:
Manager
- Prior program management experience;
- Experience in the design and facilitation of convenings among a diverse set of stakeholders, including strong interpersonal communication skills and experience in stakeholder engagement;
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to work both independently and with guidance.
- Bachelor's degree in related field plus 5 or more years of climate and energy experience OR Master’s degree in related field and 2 or more years of climate and energy experience. In both cases, at least 2 years of experience working on innovation/technology policy, with a strong interest in critical path technologies;
- Knowledge of federal agency budgets and the appropriations process;
- Strong writing and communication skills;
- Humility, collegiality, a sense of humor and a deep spirit of collaboration;
- Willingness to pitch in at all levels.
Sr. Manager
- Significant program management experience;
- Expertise in the design and facilitation of convenings among a diverse set of stakeholders, including strong interpersonal communication skills and experience in stakeholder engagement;
- Self-motivated, organized, and able to achieve program goals independently with limited guidance.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field plus 8 or more years of climate and energy experience OR Master's degree in related field, plus 5 or more years of climate and energy experience. In both cases, at least 3 years of experience working on innovation/technology, with a strong interest in critical path technologies;
- Strong knowledge and experience with federal agency budgets and the appropriations process;
- Strong writing and communication skills;
- Humility, collegiality, a sense of humor and a deep spirit of collaboration;
- Willingness to pitch in at all levels.

Starting salary range: $75,000-$92,000 (Manager) or $95,000-$115,000 (Senior Manager).

Travel, Time & Location Requirements: C2ES operates a hybrid work environment from our main office in Arlington, Virginia. If applicant is hired remote, physical presence in the main office is expected at least 5 days per quarter.
Preference will be given to applicants in the Washington, DC area. However, C2ES will also consider remote applicants for this position. While not a requirement, preference will be given to candidates that have the right to work in the United States. Some local travel might be required.
