About the Role

Front-end engineering at Actual encompasses two primary challenges:

  1. Building elegant and responsive user interfaces with React and TypeScript
  2. Researching and developing new ways of presenting rich map and terrain visualizations

Accomplishing these goals is not easy; it is very much an active R&D enterprise that aims to go well beyond the patterns of the typical web stack. We regard UX to be a fundamental pillar of our platform, and we invest heavily in the work needed to be not just good but outstandingly great. Accordingly, we value individuals who combine enterprise-level rigor, strong technical creativity, and a passion for thinking through the many tiny details that go into creating peerless user experience.

What You’ll Achieve

  • You will make a direct impact on complex sustainability transformations across the globe. Our customers aren’t passively consuming data dashboards; they are using Actual to reimagine complex real-world infrastructure that has a material impact on climate.
  • You will enrich and learn from a cross-functional team of stellar, highly collaborative coworkers, all of whom share a deep commitment to driving real-world change.
  • You will build truly first of its kind software that pushes the limits of computing, graphics, and UX on the web.
  • You will help to enrich, grow, and maintain a culture of optimism, teamwork, and resilience.
  • You will customize your growth as an engineer and technical leader with numerous opportunities to take on greater responsibility and to cross-train in domains like product development, customer discovery, and design.

The Skills You’ll Need

  • Deep experience building complex, production-level web applications with React or Svelte and TypeScript. A sharp eye for performance tuning and optimization is a plus.
  • A discerning eye for UX, with a clear history of working to understand and build for the user.
  • A strong demonstrated passion for building interactive 2D or 3D graphical environments, either on the web or in a native context.
  • Keen desire to challenge the technical gap that exists between the rich environments and detailed interaction of modern games and the web.
  • The ability to jump in and make progress on different levels of the web stack as needed. You absolutely do not need to be an expert at everything, but you should be comfortable with continuous learning and extending beyond your core domain.

Our Tech Stack

Our frontend technology stack includes:

  • React and TypeScript
  • A variety of map and geodata visualization frameworks
  • Connections to backend technologies including: Node, Python, and Google Cloud Platform

In addition to these foundational components, we also experiment actively with a variety of 3D rendering technologies.
