Job Description

About us

Chloris Geospatial is a venture-backed technology company operating at the intersection of space-tech and nature-tech. Our mission is to accelerate the global transition to a net-zero and nature-positive economy with the most reliable, trustworthy and transparent natural capital data. Today we use industry-leading technology to measure the amount of carbon stored in terrestrial ecosystems.  Our state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms fuse data from multiple Earth observation satellites to provide accurate and scalable measurements of the carbon stocks and change in woody vegetation (forests, shrubs, and mangroves), anywhere in the world. Our team has deep expertise in remote-sensing, AI & ML, ecology and sustainable business.

About the role

We are looking for a talented remote sensing scientist to support the development of Chloris’ innovative technology.  The remote sensing scientist will collaborate with data scientists and software engineers to efficiently process and analyze large volumes of remotely sensed imagery, combining them with spatial covariates in machine learning models and transform imagery into geospatial data products.  The remote sensing scientist will report directly to the Chief Science Officer.

Responsibilities

  • Process time series of remotely sensed data and imagery.
  • Use remote sensing to map ecosystem properties (land cover, carbon density, biodiversity, etc.), and changes in therein.
  • Combine multiple sources of remotely sensed (active, passive, optical, non-optical) and ancillary geospatial data in models.
  • Collaborate with data scientists and software engineers to operationalize remote sensing models in a production environment.
  • Collaborate with product developers to design, develop, and implement innovative new geospatial data products.
  • Develop plans, goals, and timelines for remote sensing data processing and mapping technology development.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in remote sensing, geospatial analytics, or 2+ years of industry experience focused on remote sensing.
  • Knowledge and experience with open source geospatial programming tools and packages.
  • Experience using time series, computer vision, machine learning, and/or deep learning applied to remotely sensed imagery.
  • Experience with remote sensing of vegetation.
  • Experience combining non-optical data sources (lidar, SAR) with optical imagery.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with software engineers and product developers.
  • Highly desirable: facility with VCM approaches and methodologies; experience in the design and/or implementation of spaceborne remote-sensing solutions for forest carbon baselining and MRV.

Location + Time Commitment

This is a full-time position.  Location is flexible with a preference for locations allowing  hybrid work from Boston, MA.  Chloris is a hybrid-first company with a transatlantic team based throughout Western Europe and the United States, concentrated near our Boston headquarters. We are committed to providing a hybrid work environment that allows for in-person and on-site collaboration at all-hands retreats, in addition to allowing for the benefits that come from flexible, work-from-anywhere arrangements.

We are also proud to be an equal opportunity employer that values diversity. We are excited to build a diverse and inclusive team and we encourage inquiries from talented and motivated applicants from all races, religions, colors, nationalities, genders, sexual orientations, ages, and disability groups. Come join us and help us build the future!
