Carbon180 is a climate NGO with a vision to remove legacy carbon emissions from the atmosphere and create a livable climate in which current and future generations can thrive. Based in Washington, DC, we design and champion equitable, science-based policies that bring carbon removal solutions to gigaton scale.
Carbon180 is seeking a senior managing policy advisor to support our growing work on technology-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR). This position will lead the identification and pursuit of opportunities for additional federal policies that drive deployment of high-accountability carbon removal technologies, particularly public procurement and other demand-side measures. The right candidate will be highly regarded and considered a leader in their field. This individual should be passionate about the role the federal government can play in delivering climate solutions and the opportunity to build broad and durable coalitions in support of a just, equitable, and high-accountability carbon removal sector. The senior managing policy advisor will work closely with the director and deputy director of policy for tech-based carbon removal to create and manage Carbon180’s CDR procurement strategy and fill other federal policy gaps as needed. Responsibilities will include identifying opportunities to advance the team’s vision and goals, partnering with environmental justice (EJ) and labor organizations and other stakeholders, leading direct advocacy with policymakers, and supporting policy-related communications and events. This individual will be part of a growing policy team and report to the director of policy.
Major roles and responsibilities
- Serve as a team leader and subject matter expert on federal procurement and other policies to support development of the market for durable carbon removal.
- With the tech policy team, identify opportunities for thought leadership and advocacy, develop high-impact, novel policy ideas, and execute Carbon180’s policy strategy related to tech-based CDR.
- Serve as a thought partner to the director and deputy director of policy and a mentor to more junior tech policy team members.
- Collaborate with the science and innovation and environmental justice teams to ensure policies are grounded in the best available science and aligned with Carbon180’s equity and justice principles, respectively.
- Support Congressional outreach to educate policymakers and advance model legislation in coordination with Carbon180’s government affairs team.
- Lead outreach and build coalitions in support of Carbon180’s policy objectives.
- Coordinate with our communications team to support relevant content creation, media engagement, social media planning, and other communications tasks. Help plan policy-related events including briefings for Hill staffers, gatherings with media personnel like reporters, ENGO workshops, and more.
- Make recommendations to the director and deputy director of policy with the potential to significantly impact the organization and the field.
YOU WILL NEED:
- A proven track record (8+ years) working on climate and/or clean energy policy, including some experience at the federal level.
- Familiarity with the state of the field and a strong intuition for policy advocacy strategy and tactics.
- The ability to manage complex projects, creating action plans and coordinating resources across teams to achieve desired outcomes.
- Experience building consensus around a policy platform across diverse stakeholders and in alignment with a shared advocacy agenda.
- Connections to key partners, allies, and decision makers and/or enthusiasm to actively build this network.
- Eagerness to think creatively and propose innovative ways to implement your ideas.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ).

WHAT WE OFFER
Carbon180 is deeply committed to providing market-leading compensation and robust benefits to our employees. Our salaries are in the 70th percentile of the Washington, DC market. We employ an external firm to conduct market analyses every three years, and we are committed to safeguarding internal salary equity. For those reasons, we have a non-negotiation policy on salaries.
The starting salary for this position will be $145,000 with opportunities for growth up to $203,000.
