About the Job
Job title: Software Engineer
Location: London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Lisbon
Part time available? Yes
Salary: £55,000-£89,000
Kaluza wants to power a world where net-zero is within everyone’s reach, by building the platform that will accelerate a sustainable, affordable and resilient energy transition. It’s a huge challenge, but often the toughest problems are the most rewarding to solve.
Since launching in 2019, Kaluza’s technology has been empowering some of the biggest energy suppliers to better serve millions of customers.
From revolutionising billing to smart electric vehicle charging, our real-time cloud platforms transform supplier operations, reducing cost to serve and boosting engagement. And most importantly, they enable suppliers' customers to drive decarbonisation with smart, low carbon technologies.
Where in the world of Kaluza will I be working?
You'll be joining the Kaluza Technology community. We’re a diverse group of both data-led and product-focused engineers, pushing the boundaries of technology and working at an extraordinary scale. We strive for engineering quality & innovation, continuously improving our best practices across our highly collaborative community. To find out more about what it’s like to work in Kaluza Technology, check out our Tech Blog here:

More specifically, you’ll be working as an engineer in our dedicated Identity & Access Management (IAM) team. This is a critical component of Kaluza’s Energy Retail platform (and of Kaluza’s ‘Flex’ platform in the future), providing authentication & authorisation services that safely ensures the appropriate accesses are permitted, whether that’s human (e.g. retail client customers or employees) or machine (e.g. external or other internal services). With millions of customers across multiple geographic regions, we naturally invest significant effort into availability, performance, security and observability, and the team prides itself on its ability to maintain a balance between rapid development of new services, iterative quality & feature enhancements alongside being highly responsive in incidents.
Our small team is highly distributed and has a strong remote-first ethos - we run all our team ceremonies virtually, as our most of our engineering pairing sessions, and aim to be as flexible as possible to balance work with life. Team members can choose how and where to work, whether it’s from one of our lovely offices or from home or a mixture of both. Every 4-6 weeks we do like to get together as a team for workshops, discussion and some socialising; for meet-ups that are not held at your local office we can cover the costs of travel and accommodation if necessary.
What will I be doing?
We very much believe in sharing both responsibilities and the successes in our team, so you’ll be exposed to many aspects of our IAM portfolio of work from the get go. The team builds, tests, deploys and supports a range of authentication & authorisation products for use across the Kaluza platform, with an diverse set of underlying technologies. We don’t expect you to arrive with experience of all of them, but you can expect to learn about and get hands-on with many, in particular Scala and TypeScript development, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, Terraform, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, AWS and DataDog. As a team, we currently follow a Kanban approach to Agile development, making use of tools like Miro, Confluence, Jira and Trello for workshops, documentation, task management, etc.
You’ll be involved in the full lifecycle from rapid prototyping to helping us scope our work and backlog refinement to developing, configuring and deploying services, to monitoring and improving our operational health. You will join our support rota to triage platform issues and respond to incidents; as a critical part of our platform we often get called upon to advise or champion core IAM principles (alongside other teams like Security Engineering), giving us a uniquely broad perspective across the entire architecture. Kaluza itself has a great learning culture, and as IAM (the problem domain) itself is deep and ever-evolving, so you can also expect to be dedicating some of your time to active learning and development.
The team is part of a larger squad (Developer Products) and so alongside our team-based work & events there will also be opportunities to…
Join in on our squad’s innovation time (and/or Kaluza innovation time)
Help out on our out-of-hours support rota
Get involved in squad events & workshops
Collaborate across teams on refactoring or improving on common services
Is this the job for me?
Ideally you’ll already have experience working as an IAM engineer, but we are very happy to consider candidates from software engineering, production engineering or security engineering who are looking to expand into the Identity & Access Management domain. Whatever your background, we’re looking for genuine enthusiasm to help us develop this space and for you to share that passion with others at Kaluza.
If you feel you can demonstrate knowledge & experience of some of the following then we’d love to hear from you!
Developing and maintaining quality SaaS APIs in AWS
Working with (and continuous improvement of use with) fundamental DevSecOps engineering elements such as CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure As Code, Kubernetes containerization and platform health alerting & monitoring
Application of basic modern identity & access management techniques and standards, such as OAuth2.0 or SAML2.0
Integrating an IdP into services to enable SSO and/or federated identity
Use of encrypted JWTs as part of an OIDC-compliant user authentication flow and/or creating policies in an RBAC and ABAC environment
Understanding of key Cyber Security and/or wider Information Security standards & policy, such as ISO-27001
