Job Description

Are you ready to rise to the challenge of climate change with the team that will deliver? Form Energy is a U.S. technology and manufacturing company that is developing and commercializing pioneering energy storage technologies to enable the electric grid to run on 100% renewable energy, every day of the year.

Supported by leading investors such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures, ArcelorMittal, TPG Rise, MIT’s The Engine, and others, we share a common belief that low-cost, multi-day energy storage is the key to enable tomorrow’s zero carbon electric grid. Driven by our core values of humanity, excellence, and creativity, we are deeply motivated and inspired to create a better world. We need talented, hardworking individuals who share our goal of tackling the challenge of climate change. Do you want to work with us today to build a better tomorrow?

Role Description

Does inventing and engineering the future of materials extraction and processing excite you? Form Futures is looking for a hydrometallurgist to add to our team of scientists and engineers tasked with advancing Form Energy’s product and technology roadmaps. In this role, you will contribute to the development of sustainable green hydrometallurgical processes for the extraction of iron and other materials from natural and secondary sources. You will design and run experiments and analyze data to elucidate the underlying mechanisms that govern hydrometallurgical processes. Your work will include literature review of the state of the art, initial thermodynamic calculations, and design of experiments to validate the underlying theories empirically.

You can expect to develop skills across a range of hydrometallurgical processes: mineral processing, leaching, bioleaching, precipitation, crystallization, solvent extraction, ion-exchange, electrowinning and electrorefining as the team works towards production of novel materials for use in Form Energy’s batteries.

What You'll Do:

  • Perform materials characterization including particle size distribution, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), etc. to understand the composition and characteristics of ore deposits and waste materials to identify viable hydrometallurgical processes

  • Independently execute experiments including experiment design, planning, prototype fixturing, data collection, data analysis, and presentation to the team

  • Identify and implement process improvements focused on improving material extraction efficiency, quality, and lessen the environmental impact

  • Analyze experimental data and draw conclusions to guide process development

  • Promote safety, especially in the development of new laboratory processes or experiments

  • Utilize computer software and modeling tools to simulate and analyze hydrometallurgical processes, making predictions and guiding process improvements.

  • Develop laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs) and standard work instructions (SWI) for different tools and processes

What You'll Bring:

  • Master's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field, or B.S. with 2+ years industrial experience in hydrometallurgical processes and techniques

  • Strong understanding of mineral processing and hydrometallurgical principles and processes

  • Experience conducting laboratory hydrometallurgical experiments with potentially hazardous chemicals

  • Demonstrated experience with materials characterization techniques such as XRD, XRF, SEM, and particle-size analysis

  • Excellent communication within a group of peers and broader organization including remote team members

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Form Energy is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.
