Through convening, policy analysis and consumer awareness building, the Coalition is pursuing fast, fair action to accelerate the development of zero-emission homes and buildings that will help the country cut one of its largest sources of climate pollution, while creating safe, healthy and affordable communities. Burning fossil fuels for heating and cooking poses a serious threat to our health and the planet — making buildings and homes the largest source of climate pollution in the world. One third of US emissions come from buildings and yet we’ve had no clear and equitable path to address these emissions. Until now.The BDC lays out an ambitious and inspiring plan for transitioning buildings off of fossil fuels at neighborhood scale. At the core of this plan are thermal energy networks (TENs), an innovative and highly efficient way to decarbonize entire communities by replacing the existing gas pipe system that currently heats buildings with an underground water loop system to provide heating and cooling to connected buildings. TENs are an elegant solution to a complex problem faced by communities across the country: how to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in our buildings at scale while providing a just transition for workers and delivering clean affordable heating and cooling to customers. We’ve known about this technology for nearly half a century, yet states and cities are newly considering TENs as they pursue options to rapidly reduce emissions from buildings.   TENs are an opportunity for utilities, municipalities, labor leaders, and environmental justice communities to re-imagine how we transition our built environment equitably and justly.POSITION SUMMARY In this newly created position, the Thermal Energy Networks (TENs) Communications Manager supports the BDC’s vision to decarbonize at scale and is key to our national work. Reporting to the Thermal Energy Networks Sr. Manager and working collaboratively with the BDC Communications Team and external thermal network leaders, this role is critical to advancing BDC’s decarbonization strategy and launching the TENs industry nationally.The TENs Communications Manager will be responsible for the following:ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSStrategy <ul><ul><li>Partner with the BDC’s TENs Sr Manager and BDC’s communications team to develop a comprehensive communications strategy designed to educate and inspire stakeholders about TENs, including defining short- and long-term goals and objectives.</li><li>Work with the BDC’s TENs team to develop targeted strategies for the different constituencies interested in TENs: utilities, electric cooperatives, municipalities, organized labor, policymakers, and the media.</li><li>Work closely with the BDC Communications Team to integrate TENs work within the BDC larger communications strategies and approaches.  </li><li>Manage communications efforts to advance the BDC’s national TENs coalition.</li><li>Ensure that campaign communications drive the overall goals of BDC and the building electrification movement forward. </li><li>Partner with the Market Transformation and Public Policy teams to ensure a coordinated communications strategy within different states and BDC coalitions.</li><li>Participate in collaborative communication strategy development with our external partner HEET.</li><li>Engage as needed in BDCs neighborhood scale decarbonization meetings to advance TENs.</li></ul></ul>Content Creation<ul><ul><li>Work with the TENs Sr. Manager to create the TENs content and design for the BDC website.</li><li>Serve as TENs writer, editor, and storyteller, creating compelling content for presentations, the BDC website, social media, speeches, opinion editorials and marketing materials. </li><li>Develop and manage communications to external stakeholders and partners as it relates to TENs, assisting with the editorial calendar and regular schedule of targeted correspondence and elevating the TENs coalition’s successes.</li><li>Support the TENs Sr. Manager in preparing for public speaking engagements and media interviews, providing talking points, speeches, and presentation materials.</li><li>In collaboration with the TENs Sr. manager and Communications Team, produce collateral materials, such as fact sheets, promotional materials, and images for social media.</li><li>Support the communications needs of the TENs coalition partners including co-branded templates and materials</li><li>Develop and implement a communications and public relations strategy for TENs, including overarching messaging and narrative, materials, talking points, and earned media and social media strategy.</li><li>Coordinate with BDC’s Membership Team and HEET to maintain a TENs contact list</li><li>Organize communications materials so they are easily accessible within BDC and for our coalition partners. </li></ul></ul>Messaging, Public &amp; Media Relations<ul><ul><li>Develop and manage relationships with state and national media influencers in order to enhance public awareness of TENs and neighborhood scale decarbonization.</li><li>Identify opportunities to boost TENs education and BDC’s visibility through writing and speaking opportunities such as opinion editorials, keynotes, and expert panel participation.</li><li>Ensure BDC and our TENs campaigns prioritize equity in their communications.</li><li>Develop and implement strategies for securing earned media, including identifying opportunities, writing and sending press releases, statements, and op-eds.</li><li>Work with consultants on supporting communications needs, including but not limited to pitching reporters.</li></ul></ul>SKILLS &amp; QUALIFICATIONS<ul><li>A passion for equitable, systems-scale climate solutions.</li><li>7+ years of communications experience, preferably within the building electrification or climate solution landscape. Knowledge about TENs is a plus.</li><li>Clarity of vision and a commitment to the highest levels of integrity, quality and collaboration.</li><li>Outstanding oral and written communications skills that demonstrate an ability to convey a compelling story about TENs, decarbonization and BDC’s mission and impact.</li><li>Ability to communicate complex information in a clear and concise way.</li><li>Outstanding leadership and relationship-building skills and a highly collaborative work style with the ability to operate as a peer and thought partner to the TENs Sr. Manager and other members of the BDC team.</li><li>Experience with diverse stakeholders who may have divergent viewpoints and agendas.</li><li>Exceptional project management skills.</li><li>A high degree of emotional intelligence and an ability to support collaboration between and among diverse stakeholders.</li><li>Experience pitching stories and media relationship building. </li><li>Entrepreneurial drive to build a TENs communications strategy with the communications team; start-up experience is a benefit.</li><li>Experience in multimedia production, photography or videography, and graphic design is a plus</li><li>Ability and willingness to travel on occasion.</li></ul>WORK ENVIRONMENT, SCHEDULE, &amp; TRAVELThe TENs Communication Manager will work remotely from their home and can be based anywhere in the United States.  Some travel will be required.The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
