Job Description

Job Description:

Does launching technology products that solve real problems give you a profound sense of satisfaction? Are you looking to apply that energy to the climate and energy transition, perhaps the most important challenge of our time? If yes, then join our growing team!

RMI is seeking an experienced and versatile Product Manager to help translate our deep experience in all aspects of climate and energy into data-backed products to guide policy and decision makers. This is an early team hire and a multifaceted role that requires strong organizational and communication skills, a demonstrated product sensibility, and experience working as a project or product manager, with a track record of delivering technology products.

To be successful in this role, you will need to have the product-oriented virtues of empathy and user-centricity, and the humility to learn from those who will be using, and impacted by, your work. You need to be able to approach problems iteratively and learn as you go. You will also need to be able to identify the essential elements of a product and ruthlessly prioritize them, combined with the soft skills to lead by influence across multi-functional teams.

The product process at RMI includes obtaining the grants that make our work possible, so assisting our development team in grant writing will be an aspect of your work, as will working with our trusted partners and contractors during implementation.

We highly encourage individuals of underrepresented groups to apply!

Your Impact

You’ll be part of the Digital Innovation Lab, or DLab, an initiative within RMI’s Climate Intelligence Program, and will report to the program's director.

DLab collaborates with RMI programs in carbon-free electricity, transportation, and buildings, industrial decarbonization, and urban transformation, and you will work with top experts in these fields. DLab’s partner programs use their domain knowledge to identify needed interventions, while DLab applies a user-centric product lens to turn these concepts into tools people can use. DLab also initiates and carries out its own work evaluating and utilizing frontier technologies in a climate and energy context.

Major Roles and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with programs across RMI to create products based on their expertise.

  • Manage timelines and deliverables across multiple partners and stakeholders.

  • Manage relationships with external partners and contractors.

  • Work with RMI’s development team to seek funding for DLab-led technology products, and carry those out.

  • Evangelize and inculcate product thinking across RMI.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Five or more years experience in project or product management related to software and technology products.

  • Familiarity with customer development, product specification, design, implementation, and delivery, and expertise in at least one of those.

  • Strong and demonstrable written communication skills, including experience writing such documents as grants, project specifications, and related documents.

Preferred Skills and Experiences

  • Experience with customer metrics and acquisition.

  • Experience with project management tools like Monday, Asana, Jira, or equivalent to manage projects and sprints.

  • Previous experience as a software developer, product designer, or other product-adjacent software role.

We encourage anyone who is interested in this role to apply, regardless of whether you feel you meet 100% of the qualifications. The top candidates will bring their own unique perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds from a variety of industries along with many but not necessarily all the skills listed above. We offer professional learning and training opportunities to help you develop the skills you may not have had the opportunity to cultivate yet.

Location

We are a remote-ready organization with team members around the globe. Our beautiful and welcoming offices are available for meetings or focused work, whether you are traveling through or living nearby. Our U.S. offices are in New York City; Washington DC; Oakland, California; Boulder, Colorado; and Basalt, Colorado. This role can be located from anywhere in the continental United States.
