About the Job

About Pacific Fusion

Pacific Fusion was founded in 2023 with the mission to power the world with abundant, affordable, clean energy.

We are rapidly designing and building a pulsed magnetic fusion system to achieve net facility gain (more fusion energy output than stored energy input). In parallel, we are developing the key components required to build affordable fusion systems.

Our plans are ambitious. We have raised over $900M so far from incredible investors, resourcing us to deliver on these plans. We are bringing together the best scientists, engineers, and operators from the fusion community, hard tech industry, and other sectors. We are united by a shared sense of urgency to provide clean power for the world, particularly managing climate change while meeting growing global energy demand. You can read more about us in this letter from our founders

About the Role

Job Overview:

As a Component Scientist, you will research and invent novel pulsed power components. You must have a proven record of research and development, advanced materials, energy storage and density, novel component invention, reliability testing, and going from R&D to production.

There are two components we are focusing on:

  • High-reliability, rep-rateable capacitor development. 100 kV, 50+ kA, million shot lifetime, 1 Hz rep-rate.

  • High-reliability, rep-rateable gas switch development. 200 kV, 50+ kA, million shot lifetime, 1 Hz rep-rate.

Other components in our pulsed power system include: anodes, cathodes, power supply, inductors, resistors, triggers and diagnostics.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the discovery and invention of new materials to be used for our highest volume and most critical components in order to increase the performance and longevity

  • Enable the affordability and commercialization of fusion through the discovery and application of new materials to withstand longer lifetimes and extreme conditions

  • Set up a lab to test and qualify materials used in all aspects of the fusion system

  • Bring best practices of materials R&D, specifically for polymer engineering, to components that have been looked over thus far

Qualifications:

  • Experience owning the R&D process for new materials, particularly around polymer engineering and energy storage

  • Starting from scratch with material discovery, reverse-engineering, and even building a materials laboratory for R&D

  • Expertise across the entire project spectrum from R&D through to production in the invention of novel materials and components

  • Thrives in a dynamic environment where we are building out material science capabilities while kicking off critical projects simultaneously

Benefits:

  • Industry-competitive salary

  • Equity plan

  • 6% employer 401k matching

  • Generous paid time off (including sick leave, vacation, paid family leave)

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance

Actual base salary offered will be determined by: experience, skills, and work location. This range is for base salary, our total compensation includes equity and benefits. We welcome you to apply even if your expectations are outside our listed range.
