Executive Summary:
The successful candidate will spearhead a global campaign to secure widespread approval for the "Declaration of the Rights of Antarctica," recognizing Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean as a self-regulating legal entity. The primary objective is to build global support for a rights-based governance system for Antarctica.
See the Antarctic Rights website here.
Problem Statement:
The Antarctic Rights initiative, formed by leading scientists, academics, and civil society representatives, seeks to establish an eco-centric vision for human interaction with Antarctica. The initiative aims to create a governance model respecting Antarctica's fundamental rights to exist, thrive, and evolve. The initiative is now entering a crucial phase requiring dedicated leadership to build a global alliance of organizations and individuals (the Antarctica Alliance) that will replace the current working group, and garner global support for the proposed declaration.
Solution:
The Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN), a dynamic network with over 5,000 organizations and individuals, is supporting the Antarctic Rights initiative by hiring a dedicated Campaign Lead. With its organizing infrastructure and global network, GARN provides the necessary support to ensure the project's success.
The Antarctic Rights working group, operating independently for the past three years outside GARN, plays a foundational role. The new campaigner will collaborate closely with this established group, ensuring continuity and leveraging the groundwork laid. While the candidate won't carry the project alone, they need to recognize the interdependence with the existing team, emphasizing a collaborative approach to drive the initiative forward.
