Summary of Role: 

As a Civil Engineer, you will provide engineering support during the design, pre-construction, construction, energisation and operation & maintenance phases of Mainstream Renewable Power’s project portfolio (REIPPPP and Bi-lateral).


What you will do:

  • Work in the engineering team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Create conceptual designs for the civil part of renewable energy power plants.
  • Preparation of technical elements of Employer’s Requirements (ERs) for EPC and Consultant contracts.
  • Drafting Scope of Works (SOW), creating Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and procuring front-end civil engineering services (e.g. Geotechnical investigation, flood studies, topographical studies, foundation designs).
  • Contract management of front-end engineering services, including the evaluation and certification of payment claims.
  • Assessing constructability of green-field sites.
  • Assisting with technical design reviews of Contractor’s detailed designs to generally accepted industry standards, engineering practices and the specific project Employer’s requirements.
  • Assisting the Construction team on civil engineering issues.
  • Reporting on compliance with relevant design codes and contractual obligations.
  • Auditing quality of construction/project during the construction phase.
  • Attend and contribute to technical meetings during the construction period.
  • Interfacing with and managing external consultants and contractors.
  • Assist in the preparation of the Civil Design Policy.
  • Producing technical reports for management.
  • Ensuring civil engineering activities are carried out to the highest quality standards and in accordance with the relevant health and safety standards.
  • Quality monitoring and regular review during the construction phase, updating the quality comments database, raising corrective actions and non-conformance reports.
  • Review and provide engineering inputs to studies and reports commissioned by other departments within the business.
  • Interfacing with provincial authorities and national agencies regarding civil-related matters.
  • Site inspections on a regular basis & reporting back to the team.
  • Assisting with successful project close out and handover to the Operations team.
  • Optimising internal processes, procedures and record-keeping across various organisational platforms (e.g. SharePoint).
  • Responsible for attending and maintaining relevant mandatory training, as deemed necessary by the business.


What we require:

  • A Degree in Civil Engineering or similar.
  • At least 5 years experience in a large-scale construction project environment.
  • Be flexible in terms of working arrangements, national travel and some international travel may be required as part of the job.
  • Have excellent communication and people skills.
  • Fluent in English.


Preference will be given to Candidates who have the following Experience:


  • Experience working for an EPC contractor or consultant in the renewable industry.
  • Knowledge of wind farm/solar farm civil design and construction methods.
  • Knowledge of substation and overhead line design and construction methods.
  • Preparation of technical specifications and other engineering documents.
  • Preparation of preliminary civil designs for renewable plants.
  • Input into contract documents & programmes for EPC contracts, turbine supply agreements and consulting engineer agreements.
  • Experience in tender/bid evaluation.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Comfortable conducting technical & commercial negotiations with EPC contractors.
  • Knowledge of engineering software (AutoCAD, GIS, civil design software).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
  • Professional Registration with relevant local or international statutory body or institutions.
