About the Job

About the Role

As a Modeling Engineer at Actual, you will research, design, and implement computational models that translate the scientific principles of sustainability into actionable transformation plans for enterprises and governments around the world. The modeling frontier that you will be helping to develop is broad and exciting, encompassing domains that include energy generation, land management, built-environment planning, transportation, and many others. This breadth makes Actual an ideal place for creative and curious scientific thinkers who are passionate about translating state-of-the-art sustainability science into real-world practice.

What You’ll Achieve

  • You will build models that have a direct impact on complex sustainability transformations across the globe. Our customers aren’t passively consuming data dashboards; they are using Actual to reimagine complex real-world infrastructure that has a material impact on climate.

  • You will enrich and learn from a cross-functional team of stellar, highly collaborative coworkers, all of whom share a deep commitment to driving real-world change.

  • You will build truly first of its kind software that pushes the limits of computing, graphics, and UX on the web.

  • You will help to enrich, grow, and maintain a culture of optimism, teamwork, and resilience.

  • You will customize your growth as an engineer and technical leader with numerous opportunities to take on greater responsibility and to cross-train in domains like product development, customer discovery, and collaborations with academia.

The Skills You’ll Need

  • Strong experience building scientific or technical models and simulations, particularly in Python

  • Comfort building complex technical models from first principles using peer-reviewed scientific literature or expert advisors as your starting point

  • Strong curiosity; excitement at the prospect of building models that span diverse disciplines, including those outside of one’s previous academic or professional training

  • An appreciation for the tradeoffs involved in modeling at different levels of abstraction or detail

  • Experience with (or strong interest in) optimizing computational models for high performance in an interactive context

  • A professional or academic background in science or engineering

Our Tech Stack

Our modeling technology stack includes:

  • Python and its scientific/technical computing ecosystem

  • A variety of map and geodata frameworks

  • Connections to other platform technologies including: frontend rendering frameworks, Node, and Google Cloud Platform

Compensation

The base salary range for this position is expected to be between $170,000 - $200,000 per year*. In addition, all team members receive meaningful equity and a comprehensive package of benefits and perks as described below.
