About the Job

About Charm

Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.

Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. Since then we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, over a hundred employees, and now have three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. Come join us in 2024 as we aim to become one of the first companies to put 10,000 tons of carbon back underground!

We're looking to expand our team of ambitious creative and hands-on forward-thinking humans. We value psychological safety and collaboration. We take calculated risks and don't sweep mistakes under the rug; instead, we pin them to the wall and learn from them. We value that everyone’s unique backgrounds and perspectives shape their work. We encourage you to read our company values.

Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!

About the Role

In the role you will dive into Charm’s manufacturing processes and help solve critical challenges that move us forward towards reaching our carbon removal goals! The role is responsible for evaluating all steps of the manufacturing process (mechanical tooling, work instructions, machine design, process flow design, etc.) and rapidly implementing improvements. This role reports to our Engineering Manager in Colorado at the Fort Lupton production site where you will be working on a team of cross functional engineers and technicians to accomplish your goals.

Responsibilities:

 • Establish baseline process flow models to capture the current state of the manufacturing system; use these to highlight and prioritize opportunities for improvement.
 • Generate new and improved engineering work instructions with dynamic visual aids, data collection techniques, and clear/concise language to ensure reliable operation execution.
 • Work alongside the Operations team to gather verbal/written feedback on key operator pain points that you can subsequently solve.
 • Collaborate with our Training department to develop and continuously improve robust training materials and process designs to set the manufacturing team up for success.
 • Contribute to new product design processes and design reviews to implement high quality process design & design-for-operations strategies into Charm’s products.

Requirements:

 • 4+ years of experience in process engineering or working in a manufacturing environment.
 • A self-starter who can identify process and design improvements that will make the system more operable, and the engineering acumen to see those through to completion.
 • Proven ability to own a machine and work cell continual improvement and development.
 • Experience working alongside operators to understand human factors considerations, tooling needs, and process inefficiencies (ex. Gathering voice of the customer feedback).
 • A desire to be hands on with equipment more than half the time.

Bonus (but not required):

 • Mechanical design experience and/or tooling design experience.
 • Experience executing hardware tests and test campaigns.
 • You have some knowledge of pyrolysis, gasification or other thermal conversion processes.
 • You have a familiarity with Linux, Python and scripting languages.
 • You have experience with SaaS tools like Datadog and/or time series databases.

Our mission is to reverse climate change and return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. To pursue this challenge, we convert waste biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into permanent, underground storage wells as a form of carbon removal, or reform it to produce green hydrogen and syngas for industrial processes like steel, cement, and chemicals manufacturing.

In 2020 and 2021, our carbon removal technology has gained traction with partners like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. In the next 18 months, we will deploy the latest and greatest version of our mobile pyrolysis plant, perform a pilot demonstration of our green syngas technology with a steel plant, substantially expand our commercial operations in the Midwest and put more than 1,000 tonnes of CO₂e underground.
